Okay, so check it out, I got this old brass watering can the other day. Thing was beat, like seriously used and abused, but I saw potential, ya know?
First things first, I gave it a good scrub. We’re talking soap, water, and a whole lotta elbow grease. Got rid of all the loose dirt and grime. It was nasty. Like, how did someone let this get this bad?

Next up, I started looking at the real problem areas. There were these weird green spots, corrosion I guess, all over the place. So, I hit ’em with some vinegar. Soaked some paper towels in vinegar and just plastered them all over the green bits. Let that sit for a couple of hours. Stunk the whole place up, lemme tell ya.
After the vinegar bath, I went back in with a scrub brush. The green stuff was definitely looser, but still stubborn. I even used an old toothbrush to get into the tiny cracks and crevices. It was slow going, a real pain in the butt, but I could see it making a difference.
Then, because I’m impatient, I busted out the brass polish. I used a soft cloth and just started rubbing. And rubbing. And rubbing some more. Seriously, my arms were burning. But slowly, very slowly, the brass started to shine again. It was like magic, seeing that dull metal come back to life.
There were still some stubborn dark spots that wouldn’t budge, so I hit those with a little bit of Brasso. That stuff’s strong, so I was careful. Wiped it on, let it sit for a minute, then buffed it like crazy. That got rid of most of the really tough stuff.
Now, here’s a trick I learned from my grandma: after polishing, I gave the whole thing a coat of car wax. Yeah, car wax! It helps protect the brass from tarnishing again. Just a thin coat, buffed it real good.
Finally, I let it all dry completely. Then, just for kicks, I filled it with water and actually watered my plants with it. Felt kinda fancy, using a vintage watering can, even if it’s a little dented and scratched.
It’s not perfect, not by a long shot. You can still see the wear and tear, the history. But that’s what I like about it. It’s got character. Plus, I saved it from ending up in a landfill. Pretty cool, right?
