Okay, so today I messed around with making a mini shovel. I’ve been needing a small one for my garden, just something to help with weeding and moving plants around without disturbing the other stuff. So, I thought, why not try making one myself? I mean, how hard could it be, right?
First, I gathered some materials. I found an old metal can that seemed sturdy enough for the shovel part. For the handle, I grabbed a piece of a broken broomstick. It was about six inches long, felt right in my hand, you know?

- Old metal can
- Broken broomstick (about 6 inches)
- Some tools for cutting and shaping
Then, I started working on the can. I cut it into a shovel-like shape. It wasn’t perfect, but hey, it looked like a mini shovel head. This was the hardest part, shaping the metal just right without cutting myself. It took some time, and I might have bent the metal a bit too much in a few places. After shaping, I smoothed out the edges with a file to make sure I wouldn’t cut myself when using it.
Next, I attached the handle to my makeshift shovel head. I just jammed the broomstick piece into the can part and secured it with some strong glue and a bit of duct tape for extra hold. It felt pretty solid, but I guess only time will tell how long it’ll last.
Finally, I tested my mini shovel in the garden. I dug up some weeds and moved a small plant. It worked better than I expected! Sure, it’s not as sturdy as those fancy store-bought ones, but it does the job. I was pretty stoked that my little project turned out to be useful.
So, that was my little adventure with making a mini shovel. It wasn’t too tough, and it was kind of fun seeing it all come together. Plus, I saved a few bucks and got to recycle some old stuff. If you need a small shovel for your garden, maybe give this a try. Just watch out for those sharp edges!
