Okay, so I got this thing for gardening, right? It’s about these long handle shovels. I needed to do some serious digging in my backyard, and let me tell you, these things are a lifesaver. Or should I say, a back saver?
I started by looking around online, ’cause who goes to a real store anymore? I saw a bunch of different types, some with wood handles, some with, like, fiberglass or something. And the blades, oh boy, so many choices! Round ones, pointy ones, some that looked like they could scoop a ton of dirt at once.

Honestly, I got a little overwhelmed. I mean, it’s just a shovel, but there’s a lot to think about. I read somewhere that you gotta think about the material, like what it’s made of, and how heavy it is. I tried to get one with a wooden handle since I found ash wood is a good material, strong and flexible. Also found that some brand like Fiskars, Bully Tools, or True Temper are good.
- Figured out that long handles are good for digging deep holes, like if you’re planting a tree or something. Makes sense, right?
- Learned that the top part of the handle, where you grip it, can be different shapes. Some are just straight, some have a D-shape, some are, I don’t know, fancy-looking.
So, I ended up ordering one online. I picked one that had a long wooden handle made of ash wood and a pointy blade, figuring that would be good for breaking up the hard dirt in my yard. I also chose a brand called True Temper – it seemed pretty popular from what I read, although I didn’t choose Fiskars because they were sold out, lol.
When it arrived, I was itching to try it out. I grabbed the shovel, went outside, and started digging. And let me tell you, it was so much easier than using a short shovel! I could stand up straight, push the shovel into the ground with my foot, and lever it back without bending over too much.

I managed to dig a pretty big hole for my new rose bush, and I wasn’t even that tired. These long handle shovels are definitely the way to go if you have a lot of digging to do. Trust me, your back will thank you!
