Okay, let’s talk about finding that ambient temperature sensor on the Ford F250. Mine started giving goofy readings a while back, sometimes way off, sometimes just showing dashes. Figured the sensor was probably the culprit, either dirty or just plain failed.
So, the first thing I did was actually start looking. I knew these sensors usually sit somewhere at the front of the truck, where they can get good airflow and read the outside air temperature, not the engine heat. Makes sense, right?

I popped the hood first, thinking maybe it was easily accessible from the top, clipped onto the radiator support or something. Scanned around up there, near the hood latch mechanism and behind the headlights. Didn’t immediately see anything that looked like the small, probe-like sensor I was expecting.
Getting a Better Look
Alright, plan B. Got down on my knees and started peering through the front grille. This seemed more promising. Most vehicles tuck them in here somewhere. On my F250, I started looking dead center and worked my way out.
It took a minute of moving my head around to get the right angle, looking past the big Ford emblem and the main grille bars. And there it was! On my truck, it was located:
- Behind the main front grille.
- It wasn’t dead center, maybe slightly offset towards the driver’s side, but still pretty much in the middle area.
- It was mounted relatively low down, attached to a vertical support bracket that’s part of the grille assembly structure.
It’s just a small black plastic piece, maybe an inch or two long, with a wiring connector plugged into the back. Pretty unmistakable once you spot it.
Found It!
To be sure, I followed the wire harness back a short distance, and it looked right. It was definitely positioned to get fresh air through the grille. Access wasn’t terrible, but reaching it to unplug or unclip it usually means getting your hand in through the grille openings or sometimes requires removing a trim piece or even loosening the grille itself depending on the exact year and trim level. Mine was reachable, just a bit tight.
So yeah, that’s where I found mine. Behind the grille, fairly low, kinda centered but maybe a bit to one side, clipped onto a bracket. Didn’t need to take anything apart just to locate it, just needed to look closely. Hope that helps somebody else save some searching time!
