Alright, so I decided I needed some more color around my place, specifically yellow. Just feels cheerful, you know? So I thought, why not try growing some plants with yellow flowers myself. Didn’t have a grand plan, just wanted to give it a shot.
First thing, I went down to the local garden shop. Honestly, I just grabbed a few seed packets that had yellow flowers on the front. Picked up some marigolds because they looked easy, and some sunflowers, mostly ’cause I wanted to see how tall they’d actually get. Got a bag of basic potting soil and a couple of cheap terracotta pots. Nothing fancy.

Getting My Hands Dirty
Back home, I just dumped the soil into the pots. Probably should’ve mixed it with something, but I just went for it. Poked some holes in the dirt with my finger, dropped the seeds in, covered them up. Watered them a bit, maybe too much the first time, saw the water pooling on top. Figured it’d sort itself out.
Then came the waiting part. Put the pots on the windowsill where they’d get some sun. Checked them every single day. Felt a bit silly staring at dirt, but I kept doing it.
- Week 1: Nothing. Just dirt. Started wondering if the seeds were duds.
- Week 2: Saw the tiniest green things poking out from the marigold pot. Felt like a proper gardener for about five minutes. The sunflower pot still looked dead.
- Week 3: Marigolds were definitely growing. Little leaves unfolding. Finally, something green showed up in the sunflower pot too. Took its sweet time.
Keeping Them Alive
Watering became the main job. Tried not to drown them again. Just gave them a drink when the topsoil felt dry. The sunflowers started shooting up really fast once they got going. Had to move them to a bigger pot sooner than I expected, which was a bit messy. Knocked one over, lost some soil, but it survived. Typical.
Didn’t really use any special plant food or anything. Just water and whatever sun they could get. Had a few little green flies show up on the marigolds at one point. Freaked out a bit, wiped them off with a damp cloth. Seemed to work, mostly. It wasn’t exactly a professional operation over here.
Finally, The Yellow!
Seeing the first flower buds was the best part. The marigolds bloomed first. Small, bright yellow flowers. Really did brighten up the windowsill. They were pretty low maintenance, gotta say. Just kept pumping out flowers.
The sunflower took longer. Grew tall, like really tall, almost hitting the ceiling before I moved it outside to the balcony. Then this huge yellow flower head opened up. Honestly, it was massive. Looked a bit funny on my small balcony, but it was impressive. Made me smile every time I saw it.
So, the whole yellow flower experiment? Yeah, it worked out okay. The marigolds were super easy, definitely recommend those if you just want something simple that works. The sunflower was more effort but worth it for that one giant bloom. It wasn’t rocket science. Just needed some dirt, seeds, water, and a bit of waiting around. Added some nice yellow splashes, which was the whole point. Might even try some different yellow ones next year. We’ll see.
