Okay, so my trusty old watering can, the plastic green one everyone has, finally bit the dust. Developed a nasty crack right down the seam after years of service. Honestly, I wasn’t too sad. Gave me a reason to look for something maybe a bit better, you know?
I’d been noticing how the blast of water from the old can’s spout would sometimes flatten my smaller plants and seedlings. Dug little craters in the soil too, if I wasn’t careful. I wanted something gentler. I remembered seeing these cans with a big, round head on the end, looked almost like a shower head.

Finding This Thing
Did a bit of searching around online, typed in stuff like “gentle watering can” or “soft spray watering can”. Kept seeing these things called “rainmaker” cans. They had exactly that big, flat rose (that’s the sprinkler bit) I was thinking of, full of tiny holes. Supposed to mimic rainfall. Sounded good. Found one that looked pretty sturdy, decent capacity, wasn’t cheap plastic. Decided to give it a shot.
Trying it Out
When it arrived, I unpacked it. Felt solid in the hand, good weight to it. The rose was detachable for cleaning, which seemed handy. Filled it up at the outside tap. First thing I noticed carrying it full – the balance was pretty good. Didn’t feel like it was trying to tip over.
Took it over to some pots with young flowers I’d just put in. Tipped it over. And yeah, it really worked like they said. Instead of one heavy stream, it was a wide, soft shower of water. Like actual gentle rain. It covered the whole surface of the pot soil evenly. No splashing soil up onto the leaves. No flattening the little flowers.
What I Reckon After Using It Awhile
Been using this rainmaker can for most of my watering tasks now, especially for containers and the raised beds. Here’s what I’ve found:
- It’s way gentler. Seedlings and delicate plants really appreciate it. No more plant-flattening incidents.
- Coverage is great. The wide spray pattern means fewer passes needed to water a seed tray or a pot properly. Seems more efficient.
- Soil stays put. Less disturbance to the soil surface, which is nice. Looks neater, probably better for the soil structure too.
- Feels well-made. This particular one feels like it’ll last longer than the cheap plastic ones I usually end up buying.
So, The Verdict?
Yeah, I’m pleased with it. It does exactly what I hoped it would – provides a softer, more rain-like watering. Makes looking after the smaller, more delicate stuff much easier. It might take a fraction longer to empty the can because the flow is dispersed, but the trade-off for gentle, even watering is worth it for me. Definitely an upgrade from the old cracked one. It just feels like a better tool for the job.
