Okay, so I’ve been wanting to spruce up my porch for a while now. It’s pretty boring, just a plain old concrete slab. I figured some hanging baskets full of flowers would do the trick. So I started doing a little research on what flowers are best for hanging baskets.
First off, I headed to the local garden center. I wandered around, looking at all the different options. There were so many! I felt a bit overwhelmed, to be honest. I grabbed one of the workers there and asked for some advice. She pointed me towards a few good choices.

One of the first things she mentioned was begonias. Apparently, they’re pretty popular for hanging baskets. Seemed simple enough. I picked out a few different colors, some red, some pink, some white. Then I moved on to find some other options to mix things up.
What I Choose
- Begonia
The garden center worker also suggested something called “Superbena Imperial Blue”. She said they’re great for adding a pop of color and they don’t need much fussing over. They’re also “self-cleaning”, which means I don’t have to deadhead the spent flowers. That’s a huge plus for me, because I’m not always the best at remembering to do that stuff. Then, I saw a pretty one called “Whirlwind Blue”, with delicate blue flowers, it looked gorgeous, so I added it to my cart.

After I got all my flowers, I needed to find some baskets. I found some basic wire ones that looked like they would do the job. I also picked up some potting mix and some slow-release fertilizer. I figured I should give these flowers the best chance to thrive.
Once I got home, I started planting. I filled the baskets with the potting mix, added some fertilizer, and then carefully arranged the flowers. I made sure to give them enough space to grow. It was a little messy, but kind of fun getting my hands dirty. I followed the advice and mixed the upright, mounding, and trailing types for a fuller look. After they were all planted, I watered them thoroughly.
I hung the baskets up on my porch, and wow, what a difference! They really brightened up the space. Now, the biggest challenge is going to be remembering to water them regularly. The garden center worker warned me that hanging baskets can dry out quickly, especially in the summer heat. I set a reminder on my phone to check them every day.
It’s only been a few days, but so far, so good. The flowers are looking happy, and I’m really enjoying the new look of my porch. Hopefully, I can keep them alive and thriving all summer long!
