Watering Your Fig Tree: Avoid These Common Mistakes
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Alright, let’s talk about waterin’ them fig trees, ya know, the ones that give ya them sweet, tasty figs. I ain’t no fancy expert or nothin’, but I’ve been growin’ these things for ages, so I reckon I know a thing or two.

First off, waterin’ is real important, especially when them trees is growin’ big and strong. Ya gotta give ’em enough water, but not too much, see? It’s like feedin’ a chicken, ya give it enough feed, but if ya give it too much, it’ll just get sick. Same with them trees.

Watering Your Fig Tree: Avoid These Common Mistakes

Now, how much water? Well, that depends. Them smart folks say somethin’ ’bout one to one and a half inches a week. But what the heck is an inch, right? I just look at the ground. If it’s dry, real dry, like that dusty road after a long summer day, then ya gotta water it good. If it’s still kinda damp, then ya can wait a bit. It ain’t rocket science, ya know?

  • If it’s real hot and sunny, like them July days, ya gotta water more often.
  • If it’s cloudy and cool, then ya don’t need to water as much.
  • And if it rains, well, then the good Lord’s done the waterin’ for ya, and ya can just sit back and drink some sweet tea.

How do ya water ’em right? Well, ya wanna get the water down deep to them roots. Not just sprinklin’ the top, that ain’t gonna do much good. Ya gotta soak the whole area around the tree, like when ya soak yer clothes before washin’ ’em. Get that water deep down in there, so them roots can drink it up.

Now, if yer fig tree is in a pot, that’s a whole different story. Them pots dry out quicker than the ground, ya see. So, ya gotta water them more often. Maybe every week or so, depends on how hot it is and how big the pot is. And make sure that water ain’t just sittin’ in the bottom, ’cause that’ll rot them roots right quick. The pot gotta have holes in the bottom so the extra water can drain out.

Some folks say ya gotta water them fiddle leaf figs – them fancy ones with the big leaves – every seven to ten days. I ain’t never had one of them, but I reckon it ain’t much different. Water ’em good when ya water ’em, and then let ’em dry out a bit before ya water ’em again. And don’t forget to give ‘em some good soil, ya know, the kind that holds water but also lets it drain. Can’t be too muddy, and can’t be too sandy neither.

So, there ya have it. Waterin’ fig trees ain’t hard. Just use yer common sense. Look at the ground, look at the weather, and give ’em what they need. Not too much, not too little. Just right. And before ya know it, you’ll be eatin’ them sweet, juicy figs, and that’s what it’s all about, ain’t it?

And remember, when you are repotting them fig trees, make sure you use the fresh soil, and water them after you have repotted. This will help them to grow faster.

One more thing, if you see the leaves are yellow or falling off, it could be too much water, or not enough. Ya gotta pay attention to them trees, they’ll tell ya what they need, if ya just listen. And that’s the truth, plain and simple.

Watering Your Fig Tree: Avoid These Common Mistakes

Water is important but not all water is good for the trees, clean water is perfect, not water that has chemicals in it.

Now go out there and grow some figs!
