Alright, let me tell you about heading out to the Flowerpot Island Lighthouse. It wasn’t some grand expedition, just decided it was time to actually see it up close.
First off, getting there means getting to Tobermory. Woke up, grabbed some coffee, and headed down to the docks. You gotta book a boat, one of those tour ones that takes you over. Stood in line, paid the fee, got the ticket. Simple enough, but you gotta plan a bit, especially in season.

The boat ride over was pretty standard. Got some spray, saw the usual sights like the shipwrecks under the glass bottom part. The main event was pulling up to Flowerpot Island itself. Those rock formations, the ‘flowerpots’, they look just like the pictures. Snapped a quick photo like everyone else.
Once we docked, it was time to walk. The path towards the lighthouse isn’t super tough, but it’s not a paved sidewalk either. It’s a proper trail, watch your step in places. Walked past the flowerpots, through some woods. Took maybe 20 minutes, give or take, at a decent pace.
Reaching the Lighthouse Station
You get to this clearing, and there’s the lightstation. It’s not just the tower, it’s the keeper’s house too, the whole setup. The lighthouse itself isn’t massive, kind of sturdy and practical looking. Painted white, red roof. It does the job, you can tell.
Didn’t get to go right up into the actual light tower part, that’s usually not open. But you can walk around the buildings. Peeked in the windows of the keeper’s house, they’ve got it set up like it used to be. Gives you a feel for what living out there must’ve been like. Pretty isolated.
Key things I noted:
- The actual boat booking process was straightforward.
- The trail walk was manageable, good footwear helps.
- The lightstation buildings are well-kept.
- The view from the area around the lighthouse, looking out over the water, that was the real payoff.
Spent some time just looking out over Georgian Bay from near the lighthouse. The water color there is something else. Felt good to just stand there for a bit. Then it was the walk back to the dock, keeping an eye on the time for the return boat.
So yeah, went there, saw it. It’s a nice spot, worth the boat trip and the walk if you’re in Tobermory. Solid day trip, ticked it off the list.
