Using Metal Watering Cans: Simple Tips for Beginners

Okay, here’s my post about metal watering cans:

Alright, so the other day I decided it was time to give my plants a good watering. I’ve got this old metal watering can that I’ve had for ages, it’s a bit rusty but it gets the job done. First thing I did was give it a good rinse, you know, just to get rid of any dirt or whatever that might have been inside.

Then, I filled it up with water from the tap. Not all the way to the top though, gotta leave some room so it doesn’t spill everywhere when I’m carrying it around. After that, I headed outside to where my plants are. I’ve got a bunch of different ones, some in pots, some in the ground. I started with the ones in pots, carefully pouring the water around the base of each plant. Gotta make sure not to overwater them, you know?

  • Check the soil: Before watering, I always stick my finger in the soil to see if it’s dry. If it’s still moist, I skip watering.
  • Water at the base: I always try to water directly at the base of the plant, avoiding the leaves.
  • Avoid overwatering: This is important, I don’t want to drown my plants!

After I finished with the potted plants, I moved on to the ones in the ground. These ones usually need a bit more water, so I made sure to give them a good soaking. And of course, I was careful not to get water on the leaves, especially for the ones that are prone to fungal diseases. It’s a bit of a hassle, bending down and all, but hey, it’s all part of taking care of my little green friends, don’t you think?

Things to Remember

Watering can be a relaxing task, but there are a few things I always keep in mind. I make sure not to water during the hottest part of the day to prevent the water from evaporating too quickly. I try to water in the morning or evening when it’s cooler.

Lastly, when I’m done, I make sure to empty out any remaining water from the can. Otherwise, this old metal watering can might start to get rusty on the inside, and I don’t want to use dirty water for my plants. That’s pretty much it! It’s not rocket science, but it’s something I enjoy doing and hope you find it helpful too.
