Well, howdy there! Let me tell ya somethin’ about them border spade shovels, you know, the ones you use for diggin’ and such. I ain’t no expert, mind you, but I’ve been usin’ these things for donkey’s years, plantin’ taters and what not.
First off, let’s get somethin’ straight. There’s all sorts of shovels out there, ya got yer big ones, yer small ones, pointy ones, flat ones… it’s enough to make yer head spin! But a border spade shovel, that’s a special kinda critter. It’s kinda like the Goldilocks of shovels – not too big, not too small, just right for most garden jobs.

Now, you might be thinkin’, “What’s so special about a border spade shovel?” Well, let me tell ya, it’s all about the size and shape. See, these shovels, they ain’t as big and heavy as them diggin’ shovels. Them big ones, they’re good for movin’ a whole lotta dirt, but they’ll wear ya out somethin’ fierce if you’re just tryin’ to plant a few flowers. And the little hand trowels, well, they’re fine for tiny stuff, but you’ll be there all day if you’re tryin’ to dig a decent hole.
The border spade shovel, it’s right in the middle. It’s light enough that even an old gal like me can handle it, but it’s still sturdy enough to get the job done. It’s got a kinda pointy blade, not too wide, not too narrow. That pointy bit, that’s real handy for gettin’ into tight spots, like along the edge of a flower bed, or in between bushes. That’s why they call it a “border” shovel, I reckon.
- Good for diggin’ holes for plants.
- Great for edgin’ flower beds and such.
- Handy for turnin’ over the soil in small gardens.
- Perfect for movin’ small piles of dirt or mulch.
Now, usin’ one of these shovels ain’t rocket science, but there’s a few things you gotta keep in mind. First off, don’t go breakin’ yer back tryin’ to dig up a boulder. These shovels are tough, but they ain’t made for bustin’ rocks. If you hit somethin’ hard, stop diggin’! You can hurt yourself if you ain’t careful.
And another thing, don’t be twistin’ the shovel around too much when you’re diggin’. That’s a good way to bend the blade or break the handle. Just push it straight down into the ground, and then lift it up straight. If you need to loosen up the soil, use a fork first. Or get yourself one of those heavy duty shovel if the ground is hard. Just do it slow and steady and you’ll be fine .
Now, I know some folks like to buy them fancy shovels with all the bells and whistles, but honestly, I don’t see the need. A good ol’ border spade shovel, that’s all you really need. Just make sure it’s got a sturdy handle and a sharp blade, and you’ll be good to go. And take care of it, you know? Clean it off after you use it, and store it in a dry place. If you treat it right, it’ll last you a good long time. It’s all about using the right tool for the right job. And in my opinion, the border spade is darn near perfect for most jobs around the garden.
To prevent back injurys when using a spade, remember you got to use your legs not your back. And don’t be twistin and turnin’ , keep you body in line with the shovel . These young folks today they always be in a hurry , twisting and turnin and hurtin themselves. Just slow down and listen you your body . This ain’t no race you know. And don’t over do it , take breaks when you need to and have some water.
You also have to learn how to know the differnce betweem all them tools. Ya got yer digging spade and ya got your shovel. They ain’t the same thing you know. The digging spade it for digging . And the shovel is for movin stuff. That digging spade its smaller than them other big shovels and it’s real good for workin in tight spots. And they are built to be strong, way stronger than they need to be so you won’t be breakin it no time soon.

So there ya have it, my two cents on border spade shovels. They ain’t fancy, but they get the job done. And that’s all that matters, right? Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go plant some tomatoes before the sun goes down.
