Okay, so I’ve been wanting to give my indoor plants a bit of a lift, both literally and figuratively. I decided to build a modern plant pot and stand. It seemed easy enough, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out!
Getting Started
First, I gathered my materials. I already have a few terracotta pots. I love how simple and classic they look. For the stand, I decided to use wood. I picked up some square dowels from the hardware store—nothing fancy, just standard pine. And Of course, I also grabbed some wood glue, sandpaper, and a saw.
Building the Stand
The stand was the trickiest part, but still pretty straightforward. I started by figuring out how tall I wanted the stand to be. I decided on a mid-century modern vibe, so I went for a height that would elevate the pot about halfway up.
I measured and cut the dowels to the right lengths. I needed four legs and some cross pieces for support. I used a simple butt joint to connect the legs to the top frame, just applying glue and holding them together until they dried. For the cross pieces, I measured and cut them to fit snugly between the legs, adding more glue to secure them.

- Cut four pieces for the top frame, creating a square that the pot will sit inside.
- Cut two pieces for cross supports, fitting them between the legs.
Assembling Everything
Once the glue was dry, I gave the whole stand a good sanding. I wanted to make sure there were no rough edges or splinters. I paid extra attention to the joints to make them look as seamless as possible. I am not a carpenter.
After sanding, I wiped the stand down with a damp cloth to remove any dust. I thought about staining or painting it, but in the end, I decided to leave the wood natural. I like the raw, minimalist look.
The Final Touch
Finally, I placed my terracotta pot inside the stand. It fit perfectly! I added my plant. The simple combination of the terracotta and the light-colored wood looks great, and it gives my plant a nice, elevated display.
Overall, this was a fun and easy project. It took an afternoon to complete, and I spent very little money. Now my plant has a stylish new home, and I’ve got a cool, handmade piece to show off. I will probably build a few more to create a cohesive look throughout my living room.
