Okay, so I’ve been getting into growing my own veggies lately, and turnips are my new project. I figured I’d share my little fertilizer experiment, ’cause, honestly, it’s been a bit of a learning curve.
Getting Started
First things first, I prepped the soil. I just dug up a patch in my backyard, made sure it was all loose and crumbly. I read somewhere that turnips like well-drained soil, so I made sure there weren’t any big clumps.

The Fertilizer Mix-Up
Now, this is where things got interesting. I initially grabbed some all-purpose fertilizer from the store, thinking, “Hey, fertilizer is fertilizer, right?” Wrong! My first batch of turnips ended up being kinda small and sad-looking.
Doing Some Research (Finally!)
So, I hit the internet. Turns out, turnips need a specific balance of nutrients. They’re big fans of phosphorus and potassium, but not so much nitrogen. Too much nitrogen, and you end up with tons of leafy greens but tiny, underdeveloped turnips.
The “Secret” Formula
I found some recommendations for a fertilizer with a lower nitrogen number, something like a 5-10-10 or even a 0-10-10. I went with the 5-10-10 ’cause it was easier to find at my local garden center.
- Before Planting: Mixed in some of that 5-10-10 into the soil before I even put the turnip seeds in. I just sprinkled it around, following the instructions on the bag.
- Side-Dressing: I learned this fancy term! Basically, it means adding more fertilizer after the turnips have sprouted. A few weeks after planting, when the seedlings were a couple of inches tall, I sprinkled a little more 5-10-10 around the plants, being careful not to get it on the leaves.
- Watering: After applying the fertilizer, always water the turnips well. Helps the nutrients get down to the roots where they’re needed.
The Results
I gotta say, the difference was noticeable. The second batch of turnips, the ones with the phosphorus and potassium boost, were way bigger and tastier. They actually looked like turnips you’d buy at the store! I was stoked.
My Lessons Learned
Don’t just grab any fertilizer. Pay attention to those numbers (N-P-K) and pick one that’s right for what you’re growing. And, do a little research before you start planting! It saves a lot of heartache (and sad-looking veggies) in the long run.
So, that is my experience about the turnip fertilizer. I hope that help you to grow your turnip!
