Okay so today I wanted to tackle something simple but important – finding those sweet indoor plants that won’t die in my kinda dim living room corner or under my office’s sad fluorescent lights. You know, spots with medium light? Not too bright, not too dark. Just… meh light. Started by digging through plant blogs and forums, wasting hours honestly.

Research Phase

First off, I made a list based on what kept popping up everywhere. Wrote down names like:

Why these? Because literally everyone swore they’re unkillable in mediocre light. Didn’t trust it though – needed proof.

The Plant Hunt

Hit up three local nurseries last weekend. Actually picked up each plant and checked two things:

  • How heavy was the pot? Light pot usually means thirsty roots.
  • Any yellow leaves hiding at the bottom? That’s trouble.

Ended up grabbing a Snake Plant, two ZZ Plants (one for desk, one for TV stand), and a Golden Pothos. Why no Peace Lily? Saw gnats buzzing around them – nope.

Placement Drama

Here’s where I messed up first try. Plopped the Snake Plant right near my dimmest corner. Seemed fine… until it felt kinda cold and damp after three days. Moved it about 5 feet closer to a north window instead. Perked right up. Pro tip: medium light ≠ dungeon light.

Pothos got clipped to a shelf near the bathroom door – indirect light from hallway plus moisture from showers? Perfect combo. This thing started sprouting new leaves in like a week.

Watering Trial & Error

Almost drowned the ZZ Plant. Seriously. Thought “dry soil” meant dry on top finger-knuckle deep. WRONG. Waited two whole weeks instead – bone dry almost to the bottom – then gave it half a cup of water. Thriving now. Lesson: ZZs want neglect.

Snake Plant? Monthly water if lucky. Pothos got thirsty every 10 days.

Current Status

Three weeks in:

  • Snake Plant’s taller by half an inch (slow but steady)
  • ZZ Plants look plastic – zero changes (good sign?)
  • Pothos vines grew 4 inches. Four! Insane.

No casualties. Office desk ZZ Plant even survived me spilling coffee near it. Stalwart little dude.

Moral: Stop overthinking. Get Snake/Zz/Pothos. Water less. Move them if they look sad. Done.
