So, we’d been trying for a while, you know? Nothing was happening. Month after month, same old story. Started getting frustrating, really frustrating. You start looking everywhere for answers.
I stumbled across stuff online mentioning DHEA. Never heard of it before. Sounded like some hormone thing. People were saying it might help with egg quality, especially if you’re a bit older like me. Honestly, at that point, I was willing to give almost anything a shot. Felt kinda desperate.

Getting Started with It
Did a bit more reading, saw mixed things. Some folks swore by it, others said it did nothing or gave them side effects. Decided, what the heck, let’s try it. Talked briefly with my doctor, who was kinda lukewarm on it but didn’t say absolutely not. Said something like “well, it probably won’t hurt, might help, let’s track things”. So, okay.
I went out and bought a bottle. Wasn’t sure about the dose, so I just picked one that seemed common from what I read online, think it was 25mg. Started taking one pill three times a day. Just added it to my morning, afternoon, and evening routine with my other vitamins. Felt weird taking something new, hoping it would magically fix things.
The Waiting Game and What Happened
Kept taking it every single day. For weeks. Then months. Didn’t notice much at first. Maybe my skin got a tiny bit oilier? Hard to say if that was the DHEA or just stress. Didn’t get any crazy side effects people sometimes mention, like hair loss or a deeper voice, thankfully.
Honestly, most days I just took the pills and tried not to think about it too much. It becomes part of the background noise of trying to conceive – the tracking, the appointments, now these pills.
- Month 1: Took pills. Nothing different.
- Month 2: Still taking pills. Skin maybe slightly greasier. Still nothing fertility-wise.
- Month 3: Doctor did some blood work. Said my DHEA levels were up, which, duh, I was taking the stuff. But other hormone levels looked okay, maybe slightly better? Hard to tell.
- Month 4 onwards: Just kept going. Felt like forever.
Did it Work? The Outcome…
Okay, so here’s the thing. After about five or six months of taking DHEA pretty consistently, we did finally get pregnant. Finally. Was it the DHEA? Who the heck knows for sure? Seriously.
We were also doing other things, trying to eat better, manage stress (yeah, right), timing everything perfectly. Maybe the DHEA gave things a little nudge? Maybe it improved egg quality just enough? Or maybe it was just finally our turn, and the DHEA had nothing to do with it. There’s no way to be certain.
I stopped taking it as soon as I got that positive test, like the doctor advised. Looking back, I don’t regret trying it. It felt like I was doing something proactive when things felt really out of control. But would I tell everyone it’s a miracle cure? Nah. It’s just one more thing you can try on this crazy fertility rollercoaster. Maybe it helps, maybe it doesn’t. That was just my experience rolling the dice with it.
