Well, let me tell you somethin’ about these pesticides, the stuff they spray on the crops. You know, the things we eat? Yeah, those. Folks always talkin’ about killin’ bugs and weeds, but ain’t nobody thinkin’ ‘bout what it does to the plants themselves. It’s a whole mess, I tell ya.
Do pesticides kill plants? That’s the big question, ain’t it? You’d think they wouldn’t, seein’ as how they’re supposed to help the crops grow. But it ain’t that simple. I heard tell that sometimes, these here pesticides, they mess with the plants somethin’ fierce.

- Makes ‘em grow all wonky. Like, the plant’s supposed to make its little seeds and stuff, but the pesticide messes it up. Then you don’t get no food, or not much anyway.
- Slows ‘em down somethin’ awful. Plants are supposed to grow big and strong, but the pesticides can stunt ‘em. Like feedin’ a kid nothin’ but candy, I reckon. They look okay for a bit, but they ain’t healthy.
- Changes how they eat. Plants gotta eat too, you know. They take stuff from the dirt and the air, and the pesticides can mess with that. Then they ain’t got the good stuff they need to grow.
Now, I ain’t no scientist, but I’ve seen things. I’ve seen fields where they spray all that stuff, and the crops just don’t look right. They’re yellow, or they’re small, or they just plain die. And it ain’t always the bugs doin’ it, no sir.
Pesticides, they’re like medicine, I guess. A little bit might help, but too much can kill ya. And it ain’t just the bugs they kill. Them chemicals get into the dirt, the water, everywhere. And that can’t be good for the plants, can it? It’s like poisonin’ the whole darn farm, if you ask me. And folks gotta eat, right? So, what do they do? They spray more pesticides! It’s a vicious cycle, they call it. I call it plain crazy.
I heard tell that some of these pesticides work on the bugs’ nerves. Makes ‘em twitch and die, poor things. But plants, they got their own ways of doin’ things. And the pesticides, they can mess with that too. They can’t send messages right, or they can’t grow like they’re supposed to.
And it ain’t just the crops, mind you. It’s the other plants too, the ones that ain’t supposed to be sprayed. The wind carries that stuff, you know. And it gets on the trees, the flowers, everything. And then they get sick too. I’ve seen it with my own eyes.
Now, folks say we gotta use pesticides to grow enough food. They say if we don’t, the bugs will eat everything, and we’ll all starve. But I ain’t so sure about that. Seems like we been farmin’ for a long time before we had all these chemicals. And we did alright, didn’t we?
And what about the people eatin’ this food? If the pesticides can hurt the plants, they sure as heck ain’t good for us neither. I heard tell of folks gettin’ sick, real sick, from eatin’ food sprayed with all that stuff. Makes you wonder, don’t it? Is it worth it, just to kill a few bugs? Makes your eyes sting, your stomach hurt, and I even heard of people dying from the stuff. That’s why I try to wash all my vegetables real good.
Farmers get more food and make more money, and the food costs less in the store. That’s what they say. But what good is cheap food if it makes you sick? And if it kills the plants in the long run? It ain’t just the plants and bugs either. It gets in the water, and kills the fish and birds too. Everything’s connected, you see. You can’t just go around sprayin’ poison without expectin’ somethin’ bad to happen. Maybe we need to find another way, a better way. A way that don’t hurt the plants, the bugs, or us. Something like going back to the old ways, before all this spraying and messing around.

But like I said, I’m just an old woman. What do I know? But I’ve seen enough to know that somethin’ ain’t right with all them pesticides. It ain’t natural, that’s for sure. And when you mess with nature, nature tends to mess with you back. So next time you see them sprayin’ the fields, you think about that. You think about what it’s doin’ to the plants, and what it’s doin’ to you.
