Okay, so today I decided to tackle something I’ve been seeing all over the internet: “Brazilian Lobster,” also known as “Shovel Lobster.” I was like, “What the heck is this thing, and can I even cook it?” So, I started digging around.
First, I googled it, obviously. I needed to figure out what I was even dealing with. Turns out, it’s not your typical Maine lobster. It’s got this flat, wide body and these big, shovel-like things instead of claws. Looked kinda weird, but hey, I’m adventurous.

Finding the Lobster
Next step: finding one. This wasn’t as easy as going to the local supermarket. I called around to a few seafood places, and finally, one place said they could order it for me. Score!
- Tried local supermarket – Nope.
- Called Seafood Place #1 – Nada.
- Called Seafood Place #2 – Jackpot!
The Prep Work
A few days later, I picked up my Brazilian lobster. Honestly, it was bigger than I expected! Now came the tricky part: figuring out how to cook this thing. More googling ensued. I found a bunch of recipes, some for grilling, some for baking. I decided to keep it simple and go for a baked version with garlic butter.
Cooking Time
I preheated the oven, prepped the lobster by splitting it down the middle (which was a bit of a challenge, that shell is tough!), and then I whipped up a quick garlic butter sauce. I slathered that all over the lobster meat and popped it in the oven.
The Result
The smell while it was baking was amazing! After about 20 minutes, I pulled it out, and it looked pretty good, if I do say so myself. The meat was white and firm, and the garlic butter had melted into this delicious, bubbly goodness.
And the taste? Surprisingly sweet and tender! It was definitely different from regular lobster, but in a good way. I’m so glad I tried this. It was a fun little cooking adventure, and I even impressed myself a little bit.
All and all, if you want a good food to try, give the brazilian lobster a try!
