Okay, so I saw these adorable watering can planters all over Pinterest and I just had to try making one myself. I’m not gonna lie, it looked pretty simple, but you know how these DIY projects go – sometimes they’re a breeze, and sometimes… well, let’s just say I’ve had my fair share of Pinterest fails.

First things first, I gathered my materials. I found an old, metal watering can at a garage sale – score! It was a bit rusty, but that just added to the charm, right? Then I picked up some:

  • Potting soil (obviously)
  • Some colorful flowers (I went with petunias because they’re pretty hardy)
  • A drill (for drainage holes)
  • Gloves (because, dirt)
  • Some small stones, or broken pottery.

Getting Started

I put on my gloves. The watering can already had a few holes, which is good, but not enough in my opinion.I took my drill and very carefully added a few more holes to the bottom. We need that water to drain, people! No soggy roots allowed.

Then at the bottom of the watering can, I put some stones and old broken pottery, to make sure the drainage holes will not be blocked by soil.

Next, I carefully filled the watering can with potting soil, leaving a bit of space at the top. I gently tapped the can on the ground to settle the soil, then added a bit more.

Planting Time!

Now for the fun part! I carefully removed my petunias from their little plastic containers, gently loosened the roots a bit, and then placed them into the watering can. I arranged them so they looked nice and full, with some spilling over the edges. I love that cascading look.

After the flowers were in place, I added a little more soil around them, gently pressing it down to secure them. Finally, I watered my new planter until I saw water draining out of the bottom. Boom! Done!

The Final Result

I placed my finished watering can planter on my porch, and it looks absolutely adorable! It’s such a cheerful addition to my outdoor space. I’m actually pretty proud of myself – this one turned out way better than I expected. It was super easy, and it’s a great way to upcycle an old watering can. If you’re looking for a fun and simple gardening project, definitely give this a try!
