I have a small yard and I wanted to try to grow some grass there. So I started to try it.
First, I have to make sure that what I have is really soil, not just dirt. I did some research and found out that soil is much more than just dirt. It’s a living thing. It has nutrients and stuff that grass needs to grow.

Then I needed to pick a fertilizer. I saw that there are many different kinds. Some numbers were like 10-10-10, 20-10-10, and 16-8-8. I guessed these were different types of nutrients. I figured I should go with 10-10-10 because it seemed like a good balance. I also made sure that the fertilizer I picked was good for the kind of grass I wanted to plant. I heard that if you mess this up, the grass might not grow right.
I got a big bag of this stuff called “Growmore” fertilizer. I read that this is good to use before you even put the seeds down. So, I got my shovel and started digging. I sprinkled this Growmore stuff all over the ground. The instructions said to use 140g for each square meter. I tried to spread it evenly. It was a bit of work, but I got it done.
After I spread the fertilizer, I had to get the grass seeds. I went to the store and found a bunch of different types. I picked one that I thought would look nice in my yard. The guy at the store said to make sure the seeds match the fertilizer, so I double-checked that.
I came back home and got ready to spread the seeds. I used a tool called a lawn spreader. I’ve never used one of these before. You just fill it up with seeds and walk around the yard. It spreads the seeds out for you. It was kind of fun, actually. I went back and forth across the yard until I covered the whole area. I tried to make sure I didn’t miss any spots. I didn’t want any bare patches in my new lawn.
Next, I watered the whole area. I used a hose with a spray nozzle. I made sure to soak the ground good. I wanted to give the seeds and fertilizer a good start. I kept doing this every day for a while. I knew it was important to keep the ground moist so the seeds could sprout.
After a few days, I started to see little green sprouts popping up. I was so excited! It was working! My little seeds were growing into grass. I kept watering them and watching them grow. It was like magic.
My Grass-Growing Schedule
- Early Spring: I fertilized again when the grass started to turn green. This was the first feeding after the initial one.
- Late Spring: Another round of fertilizer. I learned that feeding the grass regularly helps it stay healthy and strong.
- Late Summer: One more feeding. This was to help the grass get ready for the cooler months.
- Autumn (September and November): For the cool-season grass, I fed it twice more. I read that this helps it survive the winter.
It took some time, but now I have a nice little patch of grass in my yard. It’s not perfect, but I’m proud of it. I learned a lot about soil, fertilizer, and grass seeds. It was a fun project, and now I get to enjoy my green space. I feel like a real gardener now! Next, I might try planting some flowers or something. We’ll see. Growing things is actually pretty cool.
