Okay, so, let me tell you about this awesome trip I took to Flowerpot Island. It was a blast! This place is part of Fathom Five National Marine Park, and it’s just a quick boat ride from Tobermory, Ontario.
Getting There

First off, I hopped on a ferry in Tobermory. The ride was super short, only about 15 minutes. We passed by this cool lighthouse called Big Tub Lighthouse on the way out, which was a nice little preview of what was to come.
Exploring the Island
Once I got to the island, I was ready to explore. They say you should give yourself about 5 hours to see everything, and I totally agree. I wore my trusty running shoes, which was a good call because some of the trails are pretty rugged. Oh, and I made sure to pack some water and snacks – you’ll need them!
The Trails
- The Lighthouse Trail: This was the first trail I hit. It’s an easy, 30-minute walk that starts right where the boat drops you off at Beachy Cove. You follow the shoreline, and let me tell you, the views are amazing.
- The Flowerpots and Caves: This trail takes you past the famous “flowerpot” rock formations. They’re these crazy-looking pillars that have been shaped by the water over time. And the caves! There are also some ancient cedar trees, like over 750 years old! It’s wild to think about how long they’ve been there.
The Lighthouse
One of the main things to see on the island is the old lighthouse. It’s not in use anymore, but it’s a cool reminder of the island’s history. Sailors used to rely on it to navigate these waters, which can be pretty tricky apparently.
Wrapping Up

After a few hours of hiking and exploring, I was pretty tired but also super satisfied. Flowerpot Island is a really special place. It’s got a bit of everything – cool rock formations, ancient trees, a bit of history, and just beautiful scenery all around. If you’re ever in the Tobermory area, you gotta check it out!
In all, it takes an average of 4 h 40 min to complete. I took almost 5 hours to enjoy.
I had a great time on Flowerpot Island, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who loves nature and a bit of adventure.
