So, I tried repotting my houseplants in winter today, and I want to share how it went.
First, I gathered all my materials. I got some fresh potting mix, a slightly larger pot, and a small trowel. I made sure the new pot had good drainage holes because, you know, we don’t want any waterlogging issues. I picked a corner in my house that gets decent indirect sunlight, you know, since it’s winter and the sun’s not as strong.

Prepping the Plant
Then, I started with the plant. I gave it a good watering a day before. It makes the soil a bit moist and easier to work with. When I took the plant out of its old pot, I was super careful. I gently squeezed the sides of the pot and slowly pulled the plant out. If it is stuck, never pull it by the stem, because it might break. I found that using a small trowel to loosen the soil around the edges of the pot could help a lot.
Dealing with the Roots
I took a good look at the roots. I gently teased them apart a little. If they were tightly wound around, I loosened them up so they could stretch out in the new pot. If some roots looked dead or mushy, I trimmed them off with some clean scissors. This is important, you know, to keep the plant healthy.
Putting It in the New Pot
Next, I placed some fresh potting mix at the bottom of the new pot. Then, I positioned the plant in the center and filled in the sides with more soil. I made sure the plant was sitting at the same depth as before. I pressed down gently on the soil to make sure there weren’t any big air pockets.
Finishing Up
After getting the plant settled, I gave it a good watering. I watered it until I saw water coming out of the drainage holes. I also wiped down the leaves with a damp cloth to get rid of any dust.
Finally, I placed the plant back in its spot where it gets that nice indirect sunlight. I’ll be keeping an eye on it over the next few weeks, making sure the soil stays evenly moist and the plant looks happy.
That’s about it. It wasn’t too hard, and I think my plant will be happier in its new home.
