Okay, here’s my blog post about repotting a palm tree, written in a casual, personal style:
So, my majestic palm, Big Tony (yes, I name my plants), was looking a little cramped in his old pot. Roots were starting to peek out of the drainage holes, a sure sign it was time for an upgrade. I’ve been putting it off, because, well, repotting a big plant can be a bit of a workout, but today was the day!

Getting Started
First, I gathered my supplies. Here’s what I had on hand:
- A new pot (about 2 inches bigger in diameter than the old one)
- Fresh potting mix (I used one specifically for palms and citrus)
- Gardening gloves (because I’m not a fan of dirt under my fingernails)
- A trowel
- A watering can
- Some old newspapers (to minimize the mess, hopefully)
- A helper (my reluctant but ultimately helpful partner)
I spread out the newspapers on my patio to create a makeshift workspace. It is very helpful!
The Big Move
Next, It’s time to get the palm out of its old pot.
I gave the old pot a few good taps on the sides to loosen things up. Then, with my partner holding the base of the palm, I carefully tugged and wiggled the pot until it slid off. It was a bit stuck, but we managed!
Once the palm was free, I inspected the roots. They were definitely root-bound, circling around the bottom of the pot. I gently teased apart some of the roots to encourage them to grow outwards in the new pot.
Settling In
I put a layer of fresh potting mix in the bottom of the new pot. Then, we carefully lifted Big Tony and placed him in the center. I added more potting mix around the sides, making sure to firm it down gently to eliminate any air pockets. I left about an inch of space between the top of the soil and the rim of the pot.

The Finishing Touch
Finally, I gave Big Tony a good watering. I watered until I saw water draining out of the bottom of the pot. This helps settle the soil and gives the roots a good drink after their big move. I am very happy to see the new home for Big Tony!
And that’s it! Big Tony is now happily settled in his new, roomier home. It was a bit of a chore, but seeing how much better he looks makes it all worthwhile. Now, fingers crossed he thrives in his upgraded digs!
