Okay, so yesterday I finally got around to tackling those overgrown privet bushes in the front yard. You know, the ones that were starting to look like they belonged in a haunted house movie? Yeah, those.
Getting Started
First, I gathered my tools. Nothing fancy, just my trusty hedge shears, a pair of loppers for the thicker branches, and some good, sturdy gloves. Sunscreen was a must too, because even though it was a bit overcast, I burn easily.

The Pruning Process
I started by stepping back and just looking at the bushes. I mean really looking. I tried to visualize what shape I wanted in the end. They’re supposed to be sort of rounded, but they had all these crazy shoots sticking out everywhere.
I began with the shears, snipping off the smaller, wayward branches. The idea is to encourage growth inwards and upwards, not outwards like a wild mess. I just kept snipping and shaping, and let me tell you, it’s kind of therapeutic, like giving a giant haircut.
- Find the branch you want to cut.
- Make sure not cutting too much.
- Cut it just above a node.
For the thicker branches, those ones that were really messing up the shape, I switched to the loppers. These things are great because they give you more leverage. I made sure to cut those branches back to a point where they joined another branch, to avoid leaving ugly stubs.
I kept working my way around each bush, taking breaks to step back and check my progress. It’s easy to get carried away and end up with something lopsided. I had to remind myself a few times that it’s better to cut less than more, because you can always trim more later, but you can’t put it back on!
The Finishing Touches
Once I was happy with the overall shape, I used the shears again to do some light refining. I use my hands tidied things up, making sure there weren’t any stragglers. I wanted a nice, even surface.

Finally, I cleaned up all the clippings. That’s probably the least fun part, but it’s gotta be done. I swept everything into a big pile and tossed it in the yard waste bin.
And that was it! The bushes look so much better now, neat and tidy. It’s amazing what a little pruning can do. I’m actually pretty proud of how they turned out, and I think I earned my shower and a cold drink after all that work!
