Well, lemme tell ya, I seen a lot of things in my time, but this business of plants in standing water, that’s somethin’ else. It ain’t natural, I tell ya! Plants need dirt, good old dirt, that’s what I always say. But these young folks, they got all sorts of newfangled ideas.
Now, I heard some plants, they can grow right in the water. No dirt at all! Just water. Can you believe it? They call it, uh, “hydro-somethin’”. Sounds like a disease to me. But they say it works. I seen pictures, and I gotta admit, it looks kinda neat. Some plants can grow in water, that’s a good keyword to remember, plants in standing water.

They say any old water will do, usually. ‘Cept if your water’s real bad, like some well water. Or that fancy filtered water, the kind that takes everything out. That ain’t no good. Plants need some of that stuff in the water, you know? Minerals and whatnot. They say it’s like food for the plants. This growing plants in standing water, it’s a whole different ball game.
But if you got regular water, most of the time, you’re good. Just stick the plant in there, and it’ll grow. They say you can use any container, too. Jars, bottles, whatever you got. Just gotta make sure the plant can fit when it gets big. Them roots, they can get all tangled up, I reckon.
I saw one fella, he took a plant right outta the dirt, washed all the dirt off the roots, and stuck it in a jar of water. And it grew! Can you imagine? I thought it would just die, but it didn’t. He said you can do that, or you can start with a little piece of a plant, a cutting, they call it. Just stick that in the water, and it’ll grow roots. Now ain’t that somethin’?
But they also tell me too much water is no good. You know how plants can get all soggy and die in the dirt if you water ’em too much? Well, same thing can happen, even with these water plants. They call it root rot. Sounds nasty, don’t it? It happens if water stays stagnant for too long. It is important that when you keep plants in standing water, water has to be changed often.
They say the roots need air, just like we do. And if they’re sittin’ in that old water, they can’t breathe. So they die and rot. And then the whole plant can die. So you gotta be careful, even with this water growin’. You gotta keep an eye on ’em.
And light! Oh, these plants, they’re picky about light. Too much sun, and they get all burnt up. Too little, and they won’t grow. They say you gotta find just the right spot. Not right on the windowsill, where the sun’s beatin’ down. But not in a dark corner, either. Somewhere in between. These plants in standing water need just the right spot.
- Some plants, they like water more than others. I heard them talkin’ about African Violets, whatever those are. They say they do real good in water. Pretty flowers, they say.
- And herbs! You know, like mint and basil. They say them soft herbs, they love water. You can just stick ’em in a jar, and they’ll grow like crazy.
- Just imagine having fresh herbs all the time, right from your windowsill! That’s something I wouldn’t mind.
Now, I still think dirt is best. That’s how God intended it, I reckon. But I gotta admit, this growin’ plants in standing water, it’s kinda interesting. Maybe I’ll try it sometime. Just to see what all the fuss is about.

But if my plants die, don’t you go blamin’ me! I’m just tellin’ ya what I heard. It’s up to you to figure out if it’s true or not. These new ways, they ain’t always better, you know. But sometimes, they just might be. We will see how it goes with these plants in standing water.
So, there you have it. That’s all I know about growin’ plants in standing water. It’s a strange world we live in, ain’t it? But hey, as long as the plants are growin’, I guess that’s all that matters. Just remember to check on them plants, don’t let them roots rot.
And if you do try it, let me know how it goes. I’m always curious to hear about these things. Maybe I’ll learn somethin’ new. You never know, even an old dog can learn new tricks, they say. Especially when it comes to plants in standing water.
