Well, let me tell you, my peonies, they’re the prettiest things in my whole garden. But after they bloom, you gotta take care of ’em, or they won’t be so pretty next year. Here’s what I do, and it ain’t hard.
First thing, after them pretty flowers are gone, all wilted and sad lookin’, you gotta cut the flower stems. Yeah, just snip them right off. Don’t leave them hangin’ there. Why? ‘Cause they start makin’ seeds, and that takes energy. We want that energy to go back down into the roots for next year, you see? So, snip, snip, snip! Get rid of them dead flower heads. Makes the whole plant look tidier, too.

Now, the leaves. Leave them leaves alone! They’re still workin’, even if the flowers are gone. They’re makin’ food for the plant, soakin’ up the sun. You just leave ’em be until they turn brown in the fall. Then you can cut ’em back, but not before! These peony plants, they need them leaves.
Next, you gotta think about water. Peonies, they don’t like to be too wet, but they don’t like to be bone dry either. Especially in the hot summer, when the sun’s beatin’ down. Water ’em good, but let the soil dry out a bit between waterin’s. It’s like this, my peonies, they are part of them Paeonia, you know what I mean? And there are so many kinds, maybe 33, I heard. So many pretty colors.
- Water them peonies good when it’s hot.
- Don’t let ’em sit in soggy soil.
- Let the soil dry a little between waterings.
Another thing, these peonies, they like a little somethin’ to keep their roots cool in the summer and warm in the winter. I use that mulch stuff. Just spread it around the base of the plant, not too thick, just a couple of inches. That helps keep the weeds down, too. And weeds, they’ll steal the water and food from your peonies. Gotta keep them weeds away from my peony plants! My neighbor, she said use straw. I use them wood chips, myself. This mulch is important, I tell ya.
Now, some folks, they like to feed their peonies. I do, too, sometimes. A little fertilizer in the spring, before they bloom. But after they bloom? Nah, not too much. You don’t want to force ’em to grow when they should be restin’ and storin’ up energy. It’s like me, I don’t want a big meal before bed, makes me restless. Same with them peonies. Just a light snack in the spring, if you want. But I have to say, them Paeonia, they are strong. They can grow without those food.
And that’s about it, really. Just keep an eye on ’em. If you see any sick lookin’ leaves, or any bugs chewin’ on ’em, you gotta take care of that. But usually, peonies are pretty tough. They don’t get sick too easy. They’re like me, tough old birds!
So, to keep it simple: cut the dead flower, leave the green leaves, water ’em when it’s dry, and maybe put down some mulch. That’s all there is to it. Then next spring, you’ll have them beautiful blooms again. And you’ll be as happy as a pig in mud, just like me!
Oh, and one more thing! Don’t go movin’ your peonies around too much. They don’t like it. They like to stay put, once they’re settled. Just like me, I don’t like to move from my favorite chair. Find a good spot for them peony plants, with plenty of sun, and leave ’em be. They’ll thank you for it.

These Paeonia, you know, they can live for a long long time. Longer than me, probably! If you take care of ’em right, your grandkids will be enjoyin’ them same peonies someday. That’s somethin’, ain’t it? So, remember what I said: deadhead them flowers, leave them green leaves, water ’em right, and give ’em some mulch. That’s the secret to happy peonies, and a happy gardener! These are easy tips for peony care, I tell ya!
They’re kind of like people, these plants. They need a little care and attention. But they give back so much beauty. And that’s what makes it all worthwhile, ain’t it? Seeing them pretty blooms every spring. It’s like a little bit of heaven, right here in my backyard. These peony flowers are just so pretty.
And you know what, growing peonies is good for the soul. Gets you outside, gets your hands dirty. It is good to be outside. It’s a good way to clear your head and forget about your troubles. Just you and the plants. And the birds, and the bees. It’s peaceful. That’s why I love my garden. And my peonies, they’re the stars of the show. So, remember how to take care of peonies. It ain’t that hard, you will see!
