Alright, so I got my hands on one of these foldable shovels the other day. I’d seen them around, you know, those compact little things that look like they belong in a kid’s sandbox. But I’m always up for trying out new gear, especially if it might make my outdoor adventures a little easier.
Getting Started
First thing I did was, obviously, unfold the thing. It took a second to figure out the locking mechanism, there are few different types of foldable shovel,I am using the screw type, but once I got it, it felt pretty solid. It’s not like a full-sized shovel, obviously, but it didn’t feel flimsy either.
Putting It to the Test
I decided to use it for a few basic tasks. First up, I tried digging a small fire pit. The ground was a little hard, but the shovel’s point did a decent job of breaking through. I had to put some weight on it, of course, but it held up fine. It was definitely slower going than with a regular shovel, but hey, it’s way smaller and fits in my backpack. I even dig some small holes for planting a tree, and This little shovel is easy to carry.
Digging In
- I also used it to move some dirt around, kind of leveling out a spot for my tent. Again, it worked well enough. It’s not going to win any speed records, but for small jobs, it’s totally adequate.
- I even used the serrated edge to saw through some small roots that were in the way. It wasn’t exactly like using a saw, but it got the job done, which was pretty impressive.
- Folding it back up was just as easy as unfolding it. It clicked back into place, and I tossed it back in my pack. No fuss, no muss.
Final Thoughts
Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. It’s not going to replace my full-sized shovel for big projects, but for camping, backpacking, or even just keeping in the car for emergencies, it’s pretty handy. I wouldn’t want to dig a huge trench with it, but for everyday outdoor stuff, it’s a winner. I’m definitely keeping this thing in my gear kit.
