Okay, so, I’ve been getting into gardening lately, and one of the plants I’ve really enjoyed is my mountain laurel. It’s got these beautiful, glossy leaves and these clusters of flowers that just pop in the spring. But I noticed it was starting to look a little, well, unruly. So I figured it was time to learn about pruning.
First thing I did was hit up the internet, you know, like you do. I needed to figure out when the heck I was supposed to prune this thing. Turns out, the best time is in the spring, right after it finishes flowering. That way, you don’t accidentally cut off any of the new buds that are going to become next year’s flowers.

So, I waited until the flowers were done doing their thing. Then, I grabbed my trusty pruning shears – made sure they were nice and clean, by the way, don’t want to spread any plant diseases. I started by taking a good look at the whole bush. I spotted some branches that were clearly dead – all brown and brittle. Those were the first to go. Snip, snip!
- I carefully cut those dead branches all the way back to where they met a healthy branch or the main trunk.
- Then, I looked for any branches that were crossing over each other or rubbing together, this is a big no-no.
- Those had to go too because they can damage each other and create openings for diseases.
- Next, I stepped back and assessed the overall shape. My mountain laurel was getting a bit lopsided, so I did a little shaping.
- I trimmed back some of the longer branches to even things out, always cutting just above a leaf node or a bud. That’s where new growth will come from.
The whole process took me maybe an hour or two, but it was actually pretty relaxing. And you know what? My mountain laurel looks so much better now! It’s healthier, more balanced, and I’m pretty sure it’s going to have even more amazing flowers next spring.
My takeaways
Don’t be afraid to prune, just do it at the right time and be mindful of where you’re cutting! It’s like giving your plant a nice haircut. And always remember, clean tools are happy tools!
