Okay, so I’ve been wanting to add some greenery to my living room, but in a way that felt modern and stylish. I decided to try my hand at making a “modern standing planter.” Let me tell you, it was a bit of a journey, but totally worth it in the end!
The Idea and Gathering Stuff
First, I scoured the internet for inspiration. I knew I wanted something simple, with clean lines. I didn’t find one that i like online, so I decided to DIY!

Then, I went to collect my stuff together.
- A ceramic pot (I found a nice, plain white one)
- Some wooden dowels (for the legs)
- Wood stain (I chose a dark walnut color)
- Sandpaper
- Wood glue
- Screws
- A drill
- Some kind of saw(i used a small handsaw, but maybe you have better ones).
- A plant, of course!
Getting My Hands Dirty
First thing, I cut the dowels to the length I wanted for the legs. I think I went with about 12 inches, but you can totally customize this. Then, I sanded the ends to make them smooth and also sanded the * i don’t want my hands get hurt.
Next up, staining! I applied a coat of the wood stain to the dowels and let them dry completely. This part was a bit messy, so make sure you’re working in a well-ventilated area and maybe wear some gloves.
Putting It All Together
Once the legs were dry, it was time to attach them to the pot. This was probably the trickiest part. I flipped the pot upside down. I measured and marked where I wanted the legs to go, making sure they were evenly spaced.
Then, using the drill and screws to attach the legs to the bottom of the pot. I added a bit of wood glue before screwing them in, just for extra security.
After that, it’s time to put your lovely plant into the pot, then put it on the legs.
The Final Result!
And that’s it! My very own modern standing planter. I popped in a snake plant (because they’re supposed to be super easy to care for), and it looks amazing! It adds such a nice touch of life and style to the room.

Honestly, it wasn’t the easiest DIY project I’ve ever done, but it was definitely rewarding. And it’s so much cooler than just buying something from the store. Plus, I learned some new skills along the way! If you’re looking for a fun weekend project, I’d totally recommend giving this a try.
