Okay, so, I got this idea to make a mini shovel. Yeah, a tiny one. I don’t know, I just thought it would be cool to have. Plus, I can use it for small planting jobs in my garden, so it wouldn’t be totally useless. Anyway, I grabbed some scrap metal from my garage, this was just some metal sheet I had no use for and was about to throw away, I remember it’s like 1mm thick. I didn’t have a design or anything, just an image in my head, so I started cutting the metal, trying to shape it like a regular shovel, but, you know, smaller.
It wasn’t easy, to be honest. I bent the metal, hammered it a bit, trying to get that curve right. It took some time, and a few tries, but I finally got a shovelhead I was kind of happy with. Oh, and I also cut out a small rectangle from the same metal sheet for the handle part, that one was the easy part.

Then came the handle. I had some leftover wood, I think it was from an old broom or something, sitting in my shed. I figured, why not use that? So I sawed off a piece, made it the right length for my mini shovel. I think it’s about 6 inches long. Then I sanded it down to make it smooth, so I wouldn’t get any splinters.
Attaching the handle to the shovelhead was a bit tricky. I drilled a hole in both the wood and the metal rectangle I made for the handle socket, then used a small bolt and nut to secure them together. The metal part of the handle is then wrapped around the wooden handle to form the socket to hold the wood. After that, I hammered the metal socket to the shovelhead to get them to hold together firmly.
After all that, I had my mini shovel! It’s not perfect, of course, the handle is a bit crooked. But it works! I tested it out in my garden, and it’s actually pretty handy for digging small holes for seeds and stuff.
What I used:
- Scrap metal sheet (for the shovelhead)
- Piece of wood (for the handle)
- Saw (to cut the wood)
- Hammer (for shaping the metal and securing the handle)
- Drill (for making holes for the bolt)
- Sandpaper (for smoothing the handle)
- A bolt and a nut (for attaching the handle to the socket)
So yeah, that’s how I made my mini shovel. A fun little project, and now I have a unique tool for my garden. I should have made the shovelhead bigger though, it’s a little too small for some tasks.
