So, I was thinking, “How can I make my water better?” You know, it is just regular water, nothing fancy, but I wanted to see if I could kick it up a notch. And since I’m into DIY stuff, I thought, why not try something with metal?
I started looking around the house for metal things. Found some old cans, a couple of steel spacers, and even some aluminum foil. I’ve read somewhere that metals can do things to water, like remove some heavy metals or change the taste. Sounds interesting, right?

First, I cleaned all the metal stuff. I scrubbed them down real good to make sure there wasn’t any gunk or rust that could mess up the water. I used some soap and water, and for the rusty bits, I did a little extra scrubbing. Then, I rinsed everything off and let them dry out in the sun.
Then, I grabbed a few clear plastic bottles. Filled each one with tap water. In the first bottle, I dropped in a few clean steel cans. In the second, I added those steel spacers I found. And in the third, I crumpled up some aluminum foil and tossed it in. I also left one bottle just plain water, so I could compare later.
- Bottle 1: Water with steel cans
- Bottle 2: Water with steel spacers
- Bottle 3: Water with aluminum foil
- Bottle 4: Plain tap water
I sealed the bottles up tight and put them on a shelf in my garage. I figured I’d let them sit for a few days. I heard that the longer the metal sits in the water, the more it might change the water’s properties. It was kind of exciting, like a little science project.
After about three days, I took the bottles down and lined them up on the kitchen counter. Time to see what happened. I poured a little water from each bottle into separate glasses. I looked at the color, smelled them, and even took a tiny sip from each.
Honestly, the water with the steel cans tasted a bit metallic. Not bad, just different. The one with the spacers had a similar taste, maybe a bit stronger. The aluminum foil water was weird, it didn’t taste like much, but the smell was off, kind of like wet metal. The plain water tasted, well, plain.
I didn’t have any fancy tools to test the water for heavy metals or anything, but it was cool to see how different each one tasted. It made me think about all the ways we could probably change water just by using stuff we have around the house.
This whole thing got me curious about other ways to treat water. Like, what if I used different types of metal? Or what if I combined them? There’s so much to try out. I’m thinking of doing a bigger experiment next, maybe involving filters and seeing if I can make the water taste even better.

What’s next?
I’m planning to get some basic water testing kits. It would be awesome to see some actual numbers on how the metal changed the water. Plus, I want to try using charcoal or sand filters along with the metal. Maybe that could make the water cleaner and taste better. I might even invite my friends over to do a blind taste test. That would be fun, right?
This whole metal watering thing started as a simple idea, and now it is turning into a full-blown hobby. Who knew playing around with water and metal could be so interesting? I’ll keep you guys posted on what happens next. Stay tuned!
