Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to get into indoor plants for a while now, and I finally took the plunge and got myself a Majesty Palm. These things are gorgeous, right? But I quickly realized I knew absolutely nothing about potting soil. So, I did what any sensible person would do – I dove headfirst into the internet to figure it out.
Figuring Out the Soil
First off, I learned that these palms are kind of picky about their soil. They need something that drains well but also holds onto some moisture. Apparently, regular potting soil from the store can be a bit too dense for them. I guess that makes sense, they are tropical plants, after all.

Mixing My Own
After reading a bunch of articles and watching some videos, I decided to try mixing my own soil. I grabbed a bag of regular potting mix and then added some extra stuff to help with drainage. I used perlite, which are these little white rocks that create air pockets in the soil. And I also threw in some coco coir, it is like shredded coconut husk, to help retain moisture but also improve drainage. I didn’t really measure anything precisely. I just eyeballed it, added a couple of handfuls of each, and mixed it all up in a big bucket.
Potting the Palm
Then came the fun part – actually potting the palm! I carefully took it out of its original pot and loosened up the roots a bit. Then, I put some of my soil mix at the bottom of the new pot, placed the palm in, and filled the rest with the soil. I made sure to leave some space at the top so I could water it properly. Finally, I gave it a good watering, letting the water drain out the bottom. I know I am supposed to water it whenever the top inch of the soil feels dry, so I’ll try and keep to that.
Keeping it Happy
I also found out that these palms like a humid environment, so I’ve been misting it every other day. And I put it in a spot that gets bright, indirect light. Apparently, they don’t like direct sunlight too much. Oh, and one more thing – fertilizer! It seems like I should give it some diluted liquid fertilizer every month during the growing season. I will be sure to do that.
So far, so good! My Majesty Palm seems to be doing well in its new home. It’s been a few weeks, and it hasn’t shown any signs of stress. I’m really hoping I can keep it alive and thriving. Fingers crossed! It is really satisfying to see it grow, and I’m excited to see how much bigger it gets. I will keep an eye on how it goes with this soil mix. Wish me luck!
