Lightweight Large Planters: Make Decorating a Breeze!

Okay, here’s my blog post about making lightweight large planters:

So, I’ve been wanting some big planters for my patio, you know, the kind that can really make a statement. But everything I found in stores was either super expensive, ridiculously heavy, or just plain ugly. I was starting to think I was doomed to a life of tiny pots when I had a lightbulb moment. Why not make my own? And not just any planters, but lightweight ones?

Lightweight Large Planters: Make Decorating a Breeze!

My first step was figuring out what to use as the main structure. I knew I didn’t want to lug around concrete or anything. Then it hit me: those big plastic storage bins! The kind you use for storing holiday decorations or old clothes. They’re sturdy, cheap, and, most importantly, light!

I grabbed a couple of the biggest ones I could find. I think they were something like 50 gallons each. Then, I needed to make them look, well, less like storage bins. This is where the fun (and slightly messy) part started.

Making it Pretty (and Functional)

I decided to go with a faux stone look. I’ve seen people use that spray paint that has a textured finish, but I wanted something a bit more… substantial. I ended up using a combination of things.

  • First, I roughed up the outside of the bins with some sandpaper. This helps whatever you put on it stick better.
  • Next, I used some spray foam insulation. It is crucial to do this to make it look like stone.I got some other color, but it doesn’t matter cause I will paint it later.
  • After that, I waited for the foam to fully dry and harden.
  • And then I spray-painted the whole thing. I used a couple of different shades of gray and a little bit of black to give it some depth and make it look more like real stone.

And, boom! I had these huge, awesome-looking planters that didn’t break the bank (or my back). They’re so light that I can easily move them around, even when they’re full of dirt and plants. It’s been a game-changer for my patio, and I’m already planning on making more for the front yard. Honestly, I’m pretty proud of myself for pulling this off. If I can do it, anyone can!
