Lavender Tree Winter Care: Simple Tips (Keep Your Lavender Tree Alive This Winter)

Okay, so I’ve got this lavender tree, right? It’s pretty and smells amazing, but winter’s coming, and I heard these guys can be a bit sensitive to the cold. I didn’t want to lose my little tree, so I did some digging around to figure out how to keep it alive during the chilly months.

First thing I did was check what type of lavender I actually had. Turns out, it’s one of the hardier varieties, which was a relief. But even hardy plants need a bit of help when it gets frosty, you know?

Lavender Tree Winter Care: Simple Tips (Keep Your Lavender Tree Alive This Winter)

Preparing the Tree

  • I started by giving it a good pruning. I just trimmed off any dead or scraggly branches to help it focus its energy. Didn’t go too crazy, just a light haircut.
  • Then, I stopped fertilizing. Apparently, you don’t want to feed them in the winter because they’re supposed to be resting, not growing.

Protecting It From the Cold

This is where it got interesting. I decided to move my potted lavender tree into the garage. It’s unheated, but it’s still a lot warmer than being outside in the freezing wind. I figured the walls would offer some protection.

  • Before I brought it inside, I gave the soil a good watering. I read somewhere that moist soil retains heat better than dry soil. Makes sense, right?
  • I also wrapped the pot with a few layers of burlap. I’d seen people do that with outdoor plants, so I thought, why not? It’s like a cozy blanket for the roots.

Keeping an Eye on It

Now that it’s tucked away in the garage, I’m not just going to forget about it. I’ll be checking on it every couple of weeks.

  • Mainly, I’m making sure the soil doesn’t dry out completely. I’ll probably water it lightly once a month or so, just enough to keep it from turning into dust.
  • I’ll also keep an eye out for any signs of pests or diseases. Better to catch those things early, especially when the plant is a bit vulnerable.

It’s not rocket science, really. Just a few simple steps to help my lavender tree survive the winter. Hopefully, it’ll be happy and healthy come springtime, ready to bloom again. I’ll let you all know how it goes! Wish me luck!
