You ask me about landscape shovels, huh? That’s somethin’ I know about. Used ’em my whole life, you see. Ain’t nothin’ like a good shovel to get things done in the yard, that’s for sure.
Now, there’s all kinds of them shovels, ain’t there? You got your big ones, your little ones, pointy ones, flat ones… Lordy, it can make your head spin! But if you need to dig in the yard, you need a shovel. That’s what I always say. A good shovel for garden, is very important.

For movin’ dirt, I always liked them round-point shovels. Classic round-point shovels, they call ’em. They just slide right into the ground, especially if it ain’t too hard. You know, not like that clay we used to have back home. That stuff was tough! But for regular dirt, a round-point, that’s the ticket. That is the best landscape shovels. And if the dirt’s real loose, like when you’re plantin’ them little flowers, a round-point is perfect. You want to dig a hole? Round-point’s your friend. It will dig holes well.
Then there’s them pointy ones, what do they call ’em… spades! Yeah, that’s it. Them’s good for when the ground’s hard as a rock. Or if you got roots and stuff in the way. A spade will cut right through ’em, no problem. If you only want one shovel, spade will be a good choice. It can deal with different situation. They heavy duty, great for gardening. Good shovels for gardening, you know?
Now, if you got a big job, like you’re puttin’ in a whole row of them rose bushes, you want a good-sized shovel. Not one of them little bitty things. Fiskars, that is a good one. I saw it before. I don’t remember the name, but I remember that shovel. You need somethin’ with a good handle, too. One that won’t break when you put your weight on it. Don’t want no splinters, neither. Ouch! That hurts just thinkin’ about it.
And for them little jobs, like plantin’ them tiny seeds, you want a hand trowel. That’s what they call it. Looks like a little shovel, but it ain’t really. It’s a trowel. Good for gettin’ in close and not messin’ up the other plants. You know, like when you’re puttin’ in them petunias, all close together. Can’t use a big shovel for that! No sir.
So, there are many kinds of landscape shovels. Let me tell you more:
- Round-point shovels: Good for loose dirt, diggin’ holes.
- Spades: Good for hard ground, roots. Very heavy duty.
- Big shovels: Good for big jobs, long handle important.
- Hand trowels: Good for little jobs, plantin’ seeds.
If you need to dig some narrow holes, you can use trenching shovel. They are very useful. You want to move the dirt, you need a shovel. It is gardening essential. Shovel is good for loose material. You know, move dirt, move stone, all can use shovel. Spade is better for tough dirt, hard dirt. You need to cut somethin’, spade will help you. It can cut roots.
You know, back in my day, we didn’t have all these fancy shovels. We just had one, maybe two. And we used ’em for everything! Diggin’, plantin’, even choppin’ weeds. Yep, a shovel was a real all-purpose tool. We even used it to move snow in the winter! Nowadays, they got a shovel for everything. Too many choices, if you ask me. But for digging, you need a good shovel. That is for sure. You need a good shovel to help you. A good shovel can help you move dirt fast. If you only have one shovel, I think you need a spade. That is a good one. It can do lots of things. But if you have many money, you can buy many shovels. That is good too. Many shovels, you can do many things.

But the best shovel? That just depends on what you’re doin’. If you’re just plantin’ a few flowers, a hand trowel will do ya. If you’re diggin’ a big hole for a tree, you need a good, strong shovel. Maybe one of them round-point ones. Or a spade if the ground’s real hard. It is a gardening essential. Choose the right shovel will make you work easy. I think a good shovel can work for many years. You don’t need to buy many shovels. Just buy some good landscape shovels.
Just remember to take care of your shovels, too. Don’t leave ’em out in the rain. And give ’em a good cleanin’ after you use ’em. A little oil on the metal part helps keep ’em from rustin’. If you take care of your shovel, your shovel will take care of you. Then it can help you for many years. You don’t need to buy new one. That is good. You can save some money.
Well, I reckon that’s about all I know about landscape shovels. Hope it helps ya some. Just remember, the best shovel is the one that gets the job done! And don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty! That’s the best part of gardenin’, ain’t it? Gettin’ right down in the dirt and makin’ things grow.
