Well now, let’s talk about them pothos plants. You know, the pretty ones with the leaves that look like hearts? Yeah, them. They ain’t always easy to keep nice and green, though. Sometimes, they get sick, just like us old folks. So, let’s figure out what goes wrong with ’em and how to fix it.
Them Yellow Leaves, Oh My!

One thing you see a lot is the leaves turning yeller. Just plain yeller, like an old dish rag. Now, that ain’t right. Lots of things can cause that yellowing. Maybe you’re giving ’em too much water, or maybe not enough.
Sometimes, it’s just old leaves dying off, but if it’s a lot of leaves, and they’re turning yellow all over the plant, then you got a problem. It could mean your plant ain’t getting the right stuff from the dirt, or maybe it’s got some kind of bug or somethin’ eatin’ at it. You gotta pay attention.
The Rotten Roots, Stinky and Bad
Another bad thing that happens is the roots, you know, the things under the dirt, they start to rot. And when that happens, it smells somethin’ awful, like somethin’ died. That usually means you’re givin’ ’em too much water. Pothos, they don’t like their feet wet all the time. They need to dry out a bit between waterin’s. If you don’t let ’em dry out, the roots rot, and then the whole plant goes bad.
Spots and Blight, Ugly as Sin
Then there’s them spots on the leaves. Little brown spots, or big black spots, sometimes even yellow spots with brown edges. And sometimes, the whole leaf just goes brown and mushy, that’s what they call blight. That can be from too much water, or not enough air movin’ around, or even some kinda nasty little bugs or germs. Just like when we get a cold, them plants can get sick too.
- Root rot: Too much water, roots go mushy and stinky.
- Leaf spot: Spots on the leaves, brown, black, or yellow.
- Blight: Leaves go brown and mushy, whole plant can die.
Keepin’ Them Pothos Happy

Now, how do you keep them pothos from gettin’ sick? Well, first off, don’t go crazy with the water. Let the dirt dry out a bit before you water ’em again. Stick your finger in the dirt, if it feels dry, then water it. If it feels wet, leave it alone. And make sure the pot has holes in the bottom so the water can drain out. Pothos don’t like sittin’ in a puddle.
Another thing is, give ’em some light, but not too much. They like that bright light, but not that strong, hot sun beatin’ down on ’em all day. A nice, bright spot in the house is just right. And make sure the air’s movin’ around a bit, don’t put ’em in a stuffy corner where the air don’t move.
And if you see a sick leaf, pluck it off right away. Don’t let it spread to the rest of the plant. And if you see any bugs, get rid of ’em. Sometimes you can just wash ’em off with water, sometimes you gotta get some bug spray from the store.
The Right Dirt and Pot
Plantin’ ’em in the right dirt helps too. You don’t want that heavy, sticky dirt that holds too much water. You want somethin’ light and airy that drains good. And don’t use too big of a pot. Pothos like to be a little bit snug in their pots. If the pot’s too big, the dirt stays wet for too long, and that’s when you get the root rot.
Bugs and Critters
Now, about them bugs. Sometimes you get them little white fuzzy things, mealybugs they call ’em. Or them spider mites, tiny little things you can barely see, but they make webs all over the plant. And then there’s scale, little bumps on the stems and leaves. All them bugs suck the life outta the plant, makin’ it weak and sick. You gotta keep an eye out for ’em and get rid of ’em fast.

The Golden Pothos, A Tough One
There’s this one kind of pothos, the golden pothos, it’s got them green leaves with yellow bits on ‘em. It’s a pretty tough one, can handle a lot, but even it can get sick if you don’t take care of it right. You gotta give it light, and water, but not too much of either. And keep them bugs away from it.
Good Air and Right Temperature
Pothos like it warm, not too hot and not too cold, somewhere in between. And they like that air movin’ around a bit, not too stuffy. So, don’t put ‘em right next to a heat vent or a cold draft. Find ‘em a nice spot where the air is just right.
So, that’s about it. Keepin’ pothos healthy ain’t rocket science. Just pay attention to ’em, give ’em what they need, and they’ll grow nice and pretty for ya. And if they do get sick, well, now you know what to do. Don’t just sit there, do somethin’ about it!
