Well, howdy there! Let me tell ya somethin’ ’bout this here shovel plant thing. Don’t rightly know why they call it a “shovel plant,” but I reckon it’s got somethin’ to do with diggin’ in the dirt, ya know?
What’s a shovel good for, anyway?

Now, I ain’t no fancy gardener, but I’ve been workin’ the land my whole life. And let me tell ya, a shovel’s your best friend out there. You gotta have one if you wanna get anythin’ done.
- First off, you need it for diggin’ holes, big ones and small ones. Gotta plant them ‘taters and them tomatoes, don’t ya?
- Then there’s movin’ dirt around. Sometimes you gotta fill in a hole, sometimes you gotta make a little pile. Shovel’s the thing for that.
- And if the ground’s all hard and packed, you gotta use that shovel to loosen it up. Plants can’t breathe if the dirt’s too tight.
Different kinds of shovels, you say?
Well, I’ll be. Never really thought about it much, but I guess there are different kinds. I always just used whatever was lyin’ around, ya know? But I reckon some are better for certain things. Like, if you’re diggin’ a real deep hole, you want one of them long-handled ones. And if you’re just doin’ a little bit of work, a short handle’s fine. There’s them pointy ones and them flat ones too. The pointy ones are good for breakin’ up hard ground, and the flat ones are good for scoopin’ stuff up.
Pickin’ the right shovel, that’s important.
You can’t just go grab any old shovel and expect it to work miracles. You gotta think about what you’re gonna be doin’ with it. If you’re gonna be diggin’ a lot, you want a sturdy one, somethin’ that ain’t gonna break on ya. And if you’re gonna be doin’ a lot of liftin’, you want one that’s not too heavy. My back ain’t what it used to be, let me tell ya. So I try to find one that’s light enough for me to handle but strong enough to get the job done.
How to use a shovel without hurtin’ yourself.
Now, this is important. Shovelin’ ain’t no joke. You can really hurt yourself if you’re not careful. Always bend your knees, don’t bend your back. And don’t try to lift too much at once. Take it slow and easy. And if you start feelin’ tired, take a break. Ain’t nothin’ worth hurtin’ yourself over. I remember one time, my old man, he tried to dig up a whole tree stump by himself. Ended up throwin’ his back out somethin’ fierce. Had to lay in bed for a week, he did. So be careful, ya hear?

Keepin’ your shovel in good shape.
If you take care of your shovel, it’ll take care of you. After you’re done usin’ it, clean it off and put it away. Don’t just leave it out in the rain. And if the handle gets loose, tighten it up. And if the blade gets dull, sharpen it. A sharp shovel is a lot easier to use than a dull one. Trust me on that. And for goodness sake don’t leave it out in the yard where someone can trip over it. My nephew Billy did that once and broke his ankle. Bless his heart.
So, there you have it. A little bit about shovels.
Like I said, I ain’t no expert, but I know a thing or two about workin’ the land. And a shovel’s a mighty important tool. So, go get yourself a good one and get out there and dig! But remember to be careful and take your time. And don’t forget to bend your knees! Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go tend to my own garden. Them weeds ain’t gonna pull themselves, ya know.
Shovels ain’t just for gardenin’ neither
I mean you can use ’em for all sorts of things. I’ve used a shovel to clear snow, move gravel, and even mix concrete. Heck, I even used a shovel once to get a stubborn ol’ cat out from under the porch! So don’t think a shovel’s just for plantin’ flowers. It’s a tool for all seasons and all reasons. Just make sure you got the right one for the job, and you’ll be good to go.
