Alright, so I’d been wanting one of those cool lamps, you know, the ones that look like two flowerpots stuck together. Saw ’em in a few places and thought, “Hey, I reckon I could knock one of those together myself.” Didn’t want to fork out a load of cash for one, that’s for sure.

Getting the Bits and Pieces

First off, I needed the pots. Headed down to the local garden center, had a good rummage around. Found a couple of plain terracotta ones that looked about the right size. Didn’t need anything fancy, just two that would sit nicely, one on top of the other, upside down. One slightly smaller for the top, maybe.

Then, the lighting part. Just a simple pendant light kit. You know, the kind with a cord, a bulb holder, and a plug. Nothing complicated. Picked one up from the hardware store. Had to make sure the fitting would work with a standard bulb I had lying around.

Putting It All Together

Okay, this is where it got a bit fiddly. The top pot needed a hole for the cable to pass through. I was a bit worried about this part, thought I might crack the whole thing. Got myself a masonry drill bit, took it real slow and steady. Patience is key here, folks. Luckily, it went through clean as a whistle. Phew!

Next up, threading the cable from the light kit through the hole I just drilled in the bottom (which is now the top) of the upper pot. Then wired up the bulb holder. I’m no electrician, but the instructions on the kit were pretty straightforward. Matched the colors, tightened the screws. Always triple-check that stuff.

Then came the assembly of the two pots. The idea is one pot sits normally, and the other one, the one with the light, sits upside down on top of it, rim to rim. I didn’t want to use any super strong glue at first, just in case I messed it up or wanted to change the bulb easily. So, I made sure they sat pretty stable. The weight of the top pot helps keep it in place. Some people use silicone or something, but I decided to see how it went without it for now.

The Final Look

And that was pretty much it! Screwed in a bulb, plugged it in, and bam! My very own flowerpot-style lamp. Honestly, it turned out better than I expected. It’s got that simple, kinda Scandi look to it. Throws a nice warm light in the corner of the room.

It wasn’t a massive project, took me an afternoon, mostly. The drilling was the bit I was most concerned about, but it was fine. It’s pretty satisfying, making something with your own hands that actually looks decent and works. Plus, it cost me way less than buying one new. Definitely a win in my book. Might even make another one, maybe paint the pots next time for a different vibe.
