How to Spot the Signs of Plant Overwatering, Simple Tips to Save Your Plants!

Okay, here’s my blog post about how I dealt with overwatering my plants, written in a casual, personal style.

So, I’ve been trying to up my plant game lately. I really want to have that lush, green vibe in my apartment, you know? But let me tell you, it’s been a bit of a learning curve. Turns out, I’ve been a bit too enthusiastic with the watering can.

How to Spot the Signs of Plant Overwatering, Simple Tips to Save Your Plants!

It all started when I noticed some of my plants were looking a little sad. I thought, “Oh, they must be thirsty!” So, naturally, I watered them more. Big mistake. Turns out, I was actually drowning the poor things.

My Journey to Saving My Plants

  • First, I noticed the leaves. Some were turning yellow and mushy. Others had brown, crispy edges. Not a good look. I poked around the soil and felt it was always wet.
  • Then, the smell hit me. It was kind of earthy, but not in a good way. More like a musty, stagnant odor. It dawned on me that maybe, just maybe, I was overdoing it.
  • Next I checked the pots. I picked up a few, and they were way heavier than they should be. I did some poking around on the internet and learned that was a tell-tale sign of waterlogged soil.
  • Time for action! I gently took the plants out of their pots. The roots were a soggy mess. Some were even brown and slimy – root rot, not good! I did some research on my plant, and I found that the roots should be white.
  • I started cleaning up. I rinsed off the roots as best as I could, trimmed away any that looked beyond saving. Then, I let them air dry for a bit. Like when you air dry your hair, let the plants get some fresh air.
  • New soil, new me! I repotted the plants in fresh, well-draining soil. I even mixed in some perlite to help with aeration. I also made sure the pots had drainage holes so the water could actually escape.
  • The waiting game. I held off on watering for a while, letting the soil dry out properly. It felt weird not watering them, but I knew it was for the best.
  • Finally, I saw improvement. New growth started to appear, the leaves perked up, and that funky smell was gone. Success! It took some time, but I think they’re on the road to recovery.

It was a close call, but I think I managed to save my leafy friends. Now, I’m much more careful with my watering. I always check the soil before reaching for the watering can. And you know what? My plants are actually thriving now! They look healthier and happier, and my apartment is finally getting that green oasis feel I was going for. It’s a win-win!

So, if you’re a newbie plant parent like me, take it from my experience. Less is definitely more when it comes to watering. Don’t make the same mistake I did! Your plants will thank you for it.
