How to pick the best plant for low light bathroom? Follow these simple tips for a green success story.

Okay, so I’ve been meaning to spruce up my bathroom for ages. It’s one of those rooms, you know? Not a lot of natural light, like, barely any. And with all the showers, it gets pretty steamy. I really wanted some green in there, something alive, but I figured anything I put in would just give up the ghost pretty quick.

My Bathroom’s Plant Graveyard (Almost)

I’m not gonna lie, I’ve tried a few things before. Little succulents, a fern once. They all looked good for about a week, then just… sad. Wilted. Brown. It was depressing. My bathroom was basically where plants went to die. I figured I needed something super tough, something that didn’t mind living in a cave and getting a steam bath every day.

So, I started poking around, asking friends, looking at those plant blogs, you know the type. Everyone’s got an opinion. “Oh, you need this fancy tropical thing,” or “try this super rare fern that only grows on the dark side of the moon.” Yeah, right. I needed something simple, something that wouldn’t kick the bucket if I forgot to whisper sweet nothings to it daily.

The Quest for the Unkillable

I was at a mate’s place, and he had this plant just chilling in a pretty dim corner of his living room. Looked happy as Larry. I asked him what it was, and he just shrugged, “Dunno, some kind of viney thing. Hardly ever water it.” Lightbulb moment! Maybe I needed something like that.

Back to the internet, but this time I was looking for “plants that thrive on neglect” and “low light survivors.” A few names kept popping up. One that caught my eye was the Snake Plant. Sounded tough. Another was the ZZ Plant. Also sounded like it could handle itself. And then there was the good old Pothos. People were saying these things are practically indestructible.

Picking My Champion

I decided to give the Pothos a go. They seemed common enough, and I liked the idea of something that might trail a bit, add some visual interest, you know? So, I headed down to the local garden center. Didn’t go for anything massive. Just a smallish Pothos, looked healthy, nice green leaves. Got a basic pot, nothing fancy, just something to hold the dirt.

Brought it home, and the big question was where to put it in the bathroom. There’s a tiny windowsill, but it’s more like a slit. I ended up putting it on a small shelf I have, kind of in the corner. Not directly in the path of the shower spray, but definitely in the steamy zone, and definitely in the low-light zone.

The “Care” Routine (or Lack Thereof)

My care routine? Pretty revolutionary. I mostly… ignored it. Seriously. I’d check the soil maybe once a week, sometimes longer. If it felt dry an inch or so down, I’d give it a bit of water. Not too much, didn’t want to drown the poor thing. I figured the bathroom humidity was doing half the work for me anyway.

  • Light: Basically, whatever ambient light managed to sneak in. Very little direct sun, if any.
  • Water: Only when the top inch of soil was dry.
  • Food: Ha! Haven’t fed it a thing. Maybe I should, but it seems happy.

And the Winner Is…

And you know what? That Pothos is doing great! It’s been in there for months now. It’s not just surviving; it’s actually growing. New leaves are popping out, and it’s started to trail down the side of the shelf a little. It’s amazing. I finally found a plant that can handle my dungeon bathroom.

So, my personal experience? If you’ve got a bathroom like mine – low light, bit steamy, and you’re maybe not the most attentive plant parent – a Pothos is definitely worth a shot. It’s tough, it’s forgiving, and it actually looks pretty good. It’s made my bathroom feel a bit more alive, which is exactly what I was after. No more plant graveyard for me, at least not in the bathroom!
