You wanna know ’bout this flowerpot tree thing, huh? Well, I heard folks talkin’ ’bout it, sounds fancy. Ain’t nothin’ but plantin’ a tree in a pot, far as I can tell. My grandpappy used to grow all sorts of things, never needed no fancy pots though. Just good ol’ dirt and a little bit of sunshine. But I guess times are changin’. These young folks like things all neat and tidy.
So, they say you gotta use a special kind of pot. Can’t just be any old bucket you find layin’ around. Gotta be the right size, you see. Too small, and that tree ain’t gonna be happy. Too big, and it’ll be swimmin’ in there. Like Goldilocks and them bears, gotta be just right. They got these pots at them fancy garden stores, all different colors and what not.

And the dirt, oh boy, don’t even get me started on the dirt. They got bags and bags of it, all different kinds. Some for this, some for that. Back in my day, dirt was dirt. You dug a hole, you put the plant in, you covered it up. Done. But now? Gotta have the right kind of dirt, with all the right stuff in it. I don’t know what all they put in there, chicken poop, worm castin’s, who knows.
They say it’s good for growin’ fruits. Little trees, with little fruits, all in a pot. Like a miniature orchard, I reckon. Apples, oranges, lemons, even them fancy cherries. Imagine that. A cherry tree right there on your porch. Handy for pickin’, I suppose. Don’t gotta walk all the way out to the back forty to get a snack.
Now, they say you gotta water ’em regular like. Can’t just let ’em dry out. And you gotta feed ’em too. Special food, just for plants. Comes in a bottle, or little pellets. Like vitamins for trees. Who knew trees needed vitamins? My grandpappy never gave his trees no vitamins, and they grew just fine.
- Pick a good pot, not too big, not too small.
- Get that fancy dirt, the kind with all the good stuff.
- Put the tree in the pot, cover it up with dirt.
- Water it, but don’t drown it.
- Give it some of that special plant food.
Now, you want to know how to do this thing, proper like, right? It ain’t too hard, I guess. You take your pot and make sure it’s got some holes in the bottom. That’s so the water can get out. Otherwise you’ll have a soggy mess, and your tree ain’t gonna like that. Then you get your special dirt, they call it “potting mix”, which is just a fancy word for dirt if you ask me. You put some of that in the bottom of the pot. Not too much, just enough to give your tree a little bed to sit on.
Then you gotta get your tree. Now, I ain’t no expert on what kind of tree to get, but they say these little ones, they call them “dwarf trees”, are best for pots. Makes sense, I reckon. You don’t want a giant oak tree in a pot on your porch. That’d be a sight, wouldn’t it? Anyway, you get your little tree and you gently take it out of the pot it came in. Be careful with the roots, they’re like the tree’s feet, gotta treat ’em nice.
Then you set the tree in the pot, right on top of that little bed of dirt you made. Make sure it’s standing up straight, not leaning over like a drunk on a Saturday night. Then you fill in the rest of the pot with more of that fancy dirt, all around the tree. Pack it down a little, but not too hard. You want the tree to be snug, but not suffocated. Like tucking a baby into bed, you know?
Then comes the watering. You gotta give that tree a good drink, but don’t go overboard. Just enough to make the dirt nice and moist, not soaking wet. You can stick your finger in the dirt to check. If it feels dry, give it some more water. If it feels wet, hold off for a bit. And don’t forget about that special plant food. You gotta feed your tree, just like you gotta feed your kids. Follow the instructions on the bottle, it ain’t rocket science.

This flowerpot tree is like a baby, need water everyday. If you no water it, tree die. Need sun too, no sun, tree also die. If you want to do this, you must keep it in mind.
And that’s about it, I reckon. Just keep an eye on your tree, make sure it’s getting enough water and sunshine, and feed it every now and then. And before you know it, you’ll have your own little fruit tree, right there in a pot. It ain’t as hard as they make it sound, really. Just takes a little bit of care and attention. And maybe a little bit of that fancy dirt. Just don’t tell my grandpappy I said that. He’d roll over in his grave if he heard me talkin’ about fancy dirt.
So you see, this “flowerpot tree” thing, it ain’t so complicated. Just a different way of doin’ things. Maybe it’s good for folks who don’t have a lot of land. Or maybe it’s just a fad. Who knows. But if you wanna try it, go ahead. Just remember what I told ya. And don’t forget to water that thing. These flowerpot trees are easy to grow, just need some care. If you do what I said, you will get fruit.
