How Much Sun Do Flowers Need Each Day? Get the Right Light!

Last week, I was thinking about getting some flowers to decorate my living room, so I went to the flower shop nearby. But I live in a place that doesn’t get much sunlight. That had me wondering, how much sun do flowers really need?

I started digging around to find out. First, I watched a couple of videos about different flowers and their light needs. I jotted down some notes on what seemed important.

Figuring Out the Basics

  • Full Sun: Some flowers need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight every day.
  • Partial Sun: Others are okay with 3-6 hours of sunlight, especially if it’s not too intense.
  • Partial Shade: Then there are flowers that like a bit of shade, maybe 2-4 hours of sunlight, with the rest of the time in the shade.
  • Full Shade: And surprisingly, some can do well with less than 2 hours of sunlight.

After getting a handle on the basics, I decided to test it out myself. I picked up four different types of flowers from the shop:

  • One that supposedly needs full sun.
  • One for partial sun.
  • One that’s good with partial shade.
  • And one that should be fine in full shade.

The Experiment Begins

I placed each flower in a different spot in my apartment. The full sun one went right by the window where it gets the most light. The partial sun one was a bit further in, where it gets a few hours of direct light. The partial shade flower was in a corner that gets light but not directly, and the full shade one was in the darkest part of the room.

Over the next few days, I kept a close eye on them. I made sure to water them as needed and watched how they were doing. I wrote down how much sunlight each spot was actually getting and how the flowers looked each day.

What I Observed

The full sun flower started to look a bit droopy. Turns out, my window gets really intense sun, and it was probably too much for it. I moved it a bit further from the window, and it started to perk up.

The partial sun flower was doing great. It seemed happy with the amount of light it was getting.

The partial shade flower was a bit trickier. At first, it seemed okay, but then it started to stretch towards the light. I realized it needed a bit more light, so I moved it closer to the partial sun flower. It seemed to like that better.

The full shade flower was surprisingly the easiest. It was just chilling in its dark corner, looking perfectly fine.

Wrapping It Up

After a week of this, I felt like I had a pretty good idea of what each flower needed. It wasn’t just about the labels of “full sun” or “partial shade.” It was about figuring out the right spot in my apartment where each flower could thrive. I ended up rearranging a few things, but now all my flowers are doing well.

So, that’s my little adventure in figuring out sunlight for flowers. It was a fun experiment, and I learned a lot. Plus, my living room looks much nicer with all these plants around!
