How Much Light Do Pothos Need (Simple Guide for Beginners)

Oh, honey, you wanna know about them pothos plants and how much light they need? I’ve had my share of plants, you know. Been growing things since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. Pothos, they’re easy, like pie. But even easy things need the right stuff, ya know?

So, these pothos, they ain’t picky. But they do like a bit of sunshine, like most of us. How much light do pothos need? Well, they say at least six hours. Six hours is the least you can give ’em, like skippin’ breakfast – you’ll survive, but you ain’t gonna be dancin’ a jig. They ain’t gonna be as bushy and green as they could be, not with just six hours. Nope.

Now, if you really want those pothos to be happy, like a pig in mud, give ’em ten, twelve hours of light. That’s the sweet spot. They’ll be so happy they’ll be practically climbin’ out of the pot to thank ya. That’s the best amount of light for pothos, you hear? Ten to twelve hours a day.

But hold your horses, don’t go stickin’ ’em right in the sun all day long. They don’t want that. Think of it like this, you like sunshine, right? But you don’t wanna be out there in the middle of July with no hat on, do ya? You’ll get burnt to a crisp! Same with these pothos. They like it bright, but not that bright. The best light requirements to grow pothos is to put the plant near a window where it gets indirect sunlight.

So, where should you put your pothos? What’s the perfect spot for your pothos light needs? Well, find a spot that gets good light, but not direct sunbeams beatin’ down on it all day. Like near a window, but maybe a little to the side, or behind a sheer curtain. That’s the ticket.

  • Bright, indirect light is best.
  • Six hours is okay, but ten to twelve is better.
  • No direct sun all day long, they’ll get scorched.

Now, some folks say you can grow these pothos in the dark, like in a basement or something. And I reckon you can, kinda. They won’t die right away, I guess. But they won’t be happy, let me tell ya. They’ll be all spindly and pale, like a ghost. Not a pretty sight. They need some light to make their food, ya see. Plants are like us, they need food to grow big and strong.

If you got a dark corner, and you really want a pothos there, you can get one of them fancy grow lights. I’ve seen ’em, they look like little suns. You can put that over your pothos, and it’ll give it the light it needs. But make sure you give them pothos enough time under the light, at least 10 hours. They need a good long drink of that light to do any good, you hear?

Now, if you see your pothos droppin’ leaves, the older ones, that means it ain’t gettin’ enough light. It’s like it’s starvin’. You gotta move it to a brighter spot, or get it one of them grow lights. If the plant is way up high in a room, it’s probably not getting enough light to do good.

Pothos plants do not require an abundance of sunlight. Too much sun is no good either, you gotta get the right balance.

These pothos are tough, though, I’ll give ’em that. They can handle a lot, even if they ain’t gettin’ the perfect amount of light. But if you want ’em to really shine, give ’em that good, bright, indirect light. They’ll thank you for it, I promise.

So, there ya have it. That’s all I know about pothos and light. Just remember, they’re like us. They need light, but not too much. They need food, which they make from light. And they like a comfy spot, not too hot, not too cold. Treat ’em right, and they’ll be with you for a long, long time. You’ll have a pretty plant, and that’s somethin’ to be proud of, ain’t it?
