Alright, so today let’s talk about something we’ve all messed up at some point – giving our plants a bit too much love, aka overwatering. I’ve been there, done that, and let me tell you, it’s not pretty. I remember this one time, I got this beautiful new fern. I was so excited, I was watering it like every day, thinking I was the best plant parent ever.
Yeah, that didn’t go well. Soon enough, the leaves started turning yellow. At first, I thought, “Maybe it needs more water?” Big mistake. Then the leaves started to droop. It looked so sad, and I was genuinely confused. I mean, the soil was moist, so it couldn’t be underwatering, right?

Then I noticed this weird smell coming from the pot. It wasn’t strong, but it was there – a kind of rotten, musty smell. That’s when I started to get worried. I did some digging around, no pun intended, and realized I was drowning my poor fern.
Here’s the thing I learned: when you overwater, the soil gets all clogged up. The roots need air, not just water, and they can’t get any if there’s too much water around. So, what did I do? First, I stopped watering immediately. I had to let that soil dry out.
Next, I checked the drainage. Turns out, the pot I was using didn’t have very good holes at the bottom. So, I carefully took my fern out and repotted it into a pot with better drainage. This is key, folks. You gotta have good drainage.
After that, I made sure to only water when the top inch of the soil felt dry. That’s the trick I found to work best. Just stick your finger in the soil, and if it’s dry, then it’s time to water. It took a while, but my fern started to perk up. New leaves started growing, and they were a healthy green, not that sickly yellow.
- Yellowing leaves: This is usually the first sign I see.
- Drooping or wilting: Even when the soil is wet, weird, right?
- Rotten smell: A sign that things are getting serious.
- Moldy soil: Sometimes you’ll see mold on the top of the soil, bad news.
So, from this whole experience, I learned to pay closer attention to my plants. Overwatering is a real problem, and it’s easy to do. But if you keep an eye out for these signs and adjust how you’re watering, you can save your plant babies before it’s too late.
It’s all about finding that balance. Not too much water, not too little. Just enough to keep those roots happy and those leaves green. Trust me, your plants will thank you for it!
