Growing Bougainvillea Indoors? Heres Your Care Guide
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Well now, let me tell ya somethin’ about them bougainvillea plants. Folks call ’em paper flowers, and they sure are pretty, but takin’ care of ’em inside ain’t no walk in the park. But don’t you worry none, I’ll tell ya what I know.

First off, these here plants, they love sunshine somethin’ fierce. Sunshine is key, yup, just like them fancy folks say. You gotta find the brightest spot in your house, near a window that gets sun all day long. That’s what they call a “south-facing window,” if you wanna get all technical about it. And don’t just stick it there and forget about it! You gotta turn the pot every now and then so the plant don’t grow all wonky on one side.

Now, about waterin’. These plants, they like a good drink, but they don’t wanna sit in soggy dirt neither. It’s like this, in the hot months, when it’s real warm, you gotta water ’em good, maybe once a week, maybe more. If it’s hotter than a pistol, like them city folks say, maybe twice a week even. But when it’s cold, you don’t need to water so much. Just stick your finger in the dirt, and if it feels dry, then give it a little water. If it’s still wet, leave it be.

  • Sunshine: Lots of it! South-facing window is best.
  • Watering: Regular watering in warm weather, less in cold weather. Don’t let it sit in water.
  • Turning: Spin the pot around so it grows even.

Some folks say you can put these plants away in the winter, like in a basement or somethin’. Keep ’em cool and dark, and don’t give ’em much water. Then, come spring, you bring ’em back out and give ’em some water, some sun, and some of that plant food stuff. They say it gives them a jump start before you put them back outside for the warm weather. I never bothered with all that, myself. Just kept mine in the sunny window all year long.

Now, let me warn ya ’bout somethin’. These here bougainvillea plants, they got thorns. Sharp ones! They’ll poke ya good if you ain’t careful. And I heard tell that the sap, that’s the juice inside the plant, ain’t good for ya if you eat it. So, keep it away from the little ‘uns and the critters, just to be safe. They’re not recommended in homes with children, the elderly, or pets, just like the safety folks say. You don’t want anybody getting hurt, now do ya?

So, can you grow these bougainvillea plants inside? Well, sure you can. It ain’t easy, but it ain’t impossible neither. You just gotta give ’em lots of sun, the right amount of water, and keep ’em away from the young’uns. And if you do all that, you might just get some of them pretty flowers, even in the dead of winter. Makes the house look cheerful, that’s for sure.

And remember, these plants, they can get big. But you can trim ’em up, make ’em smaller, if you need to. Just don’t go whacking off all the branches at once. Take it slow, snip a little here, a little there. Bougainvillea are big plants, but they can be trained and pruned to limit their size. It ain’t rocket science, just common sense. And that’s about all I know about growin’ them paper flowers inside.

If your leaves start fallin’ off, or the flowers ain’t bloomin’, well, that means it ain’t gettin’ enough sun, or maybe it’s too cold. Just like people, these plants need warmth and light to thrive. So, find a sunnier spot, or maybe turn up the heat a little. And don’t give up on ’em. Sometimes, they just need a little TLC, that’s tender loving care, to get ’em goin’ again.

So, there you have it. My two cents on growin’ bougainvillea inside. It ain’t a perfect science, but if you follow my advice, you might just have some luck. And even if you don’t, well, at least you tried. That’s what I always say, it’s better to try and fail than to never try at all. Now go on, get yourself a bougainvillea plant and see what you can do.
