Okay, so I saw this super cool idea online for a pendant light made out of a flowerpot, and I just had to try it. I’m all about that DIY life, and this seemed like a fun, relatively easy project. Plus, I needed a new light fixture for my reading nook.
Getting Started
First things first, I gathered my materials. I hit up my local hardware store and grabbed:

- A terracotta flowerpot (the size is up to you, but I went with a medium-sized one)
- A pendant light kit (make sure it fits the pot!)
- Some spray paint (I chose a matte black, ’cause I’m going for a modern vibe)
- A drill with a ceramic drill bit (this is important, don’t skip this!)
- Sandpaper
- Painter’s tape
- Safety glasses (safety first, people!)
Prepping the Pot
The flowerpot had a drainage hole at the bottom, which was perfect for the light cord. But I needed to make it a bit bigger. So, I put on my safety glasses, grabbed my drill and the ceramic bit, and carefully widened the hole. Go slow with this, you don’t want to crack the pot! I used some medium-grit sandpaper for smoothing out all of rough edge.
Next, I cleaned the pot really well and let it dry completely. Then, I taped off the inside of the pot because I only wanted to paint the outside. Time for spray paint! I did a couple of thin coats, letting each coat dry before applying the next. Patience is key here, or you’ll get drips.
Putting It All Together
Once the paint was totally dry (I waited a full 24 hours, just to be sure), I removed the painter’s tape. Then, I followed the instructions that came with the pendant light kit to assemble it. It was pretty straightforward, mostly just screwing things together and connecting wires. I made sure to turn off the power at the breaker box before messing with any wiring, of course, to avoid some unplesant situations.
I carefully fed the light cord through the hole in the flowerpot, screwed in a light bulb, and then… drumroll… I flipped the switch!
The Final Result
It worked! My very own, handmade flowerpot pendant light. And honestly, it looks amazing. It adds such a cool, unique touch to my reading nook. I’m super proud of how it turned out, and it was way easier than I thought it would be. If you’re looking for a fun, relatively simple DIY project, I totally recommend giving this a try! I felt like a home decor rockstar!
