Alright folks, just tackled something different today – a gardening tools crossword puzzle someone sent me. Figured it might be fun and useful, maybe help someone else out. Plus, you know how easy it is to blank on the exact name of some tool!
Getting Stuck Right Out the Gate
Sat down with my coffee, puzzle printed out. First clue hits me: “Three-letter word for a small hand digging tool.” Easy, right? Typed in “SPOON”. Dumb, I know. Instantly felt silly. Coffee hadn’t kicked in, maybe.

Then clue two: “Cuts through tough roots and branches (Pruning ____).” I wrote down “KNIFE”. Five letters? Fit the boxes? Nope, too short. Grumbled a bit. Why was this harder than pulling actual weeds?
Dug Up My Actual Tools (Literally)
Put the pen down, walked out to the shed. Seriously. Needed to see my stuff. Opened the door, looked at all the metal hanging there.
- Spotted my little hand digger. Right there. Not a spoon. “TROWEL”! Five letters, starts with T. Duh. Went back, scratched out the mistake.
- Looked at the sharp things. Pruning KNIFE? Nah, that’s tiny work. Saw my big, bad bypass ones – “LOOPERS”. Nope. Then, there it was: “PRUNERS”. Bam. Seven letters. Filled it in.
- Got rolling then. “Long handle, flat blade for turning soil?” – “SPADE”. Of course. “Waters the garden evenly?” – “HOSE”. Obvious when you stop overthinking it.
Just kept walking around the shed, looking at each tool, matching it to the clues. Felt like giving myself a tour.
That One Tricky Stinker
Hit a wall again near the end. “Tool for collecting fallen leaves, often has plastic tines.” Nine letters. Blanked completely. Rake? Only four letters. Leaf Vacuum? Too many words.
Stared at the shelf. Saw my old, fan-shaped bamboo thing and my newer plastic one. The clue said “plastic tines”… and it clicked. “LEAFRAKE”. One word? Yup. Wrote it in slowly. Felt good.
Finished up the rest – “WHEELBARROW” for hauling stuff (always a beast to spell!), “Hoe” for weeding. Done and dusted.
Why Bother? Just a Puzzle?
Seemed silly at first. But honestly?

- Jogged my memory. Sometimes you forget the exact name, even for stuff you use weekly. Names get mushed together.
- Spot-on definitions help. That “pruning ____” clue? Makes you realize what the tool does, not just what you call it.
- Good for beginners. If you’re new? Seeing the clue + name together helps cement it. Better than just a list.
Felt pretty satisfying clicking that last box in. Won’t solve world hunger, but hey, one less little mystery floating around in the gardening brain. Maybe print one out next time you’re bored waiting for seeds to sprout! You’ll know your spade from your shovel.
