Okay, so a few weeks ago, I picked up this plant called a frosty fern. It’s not really a fern, but it looks like one, all delicate and, well, frosty. I thought it’d be a nice touch for my living room, which, let’s be honest, can look a little drab sometimes.
Getting Started
First thing I did was find a cute little pot for it. Nothing too fancy, just a simple ceramic one. Then, I filled it with some potting mix. I made sure the soil was the kind that doesn’t dry out too fast because I read somewhere that these plants like to stay moist.

Watering
This is where I almost messed up. I’m used to letting my plants dry out a bit between waterings, but not this guy. I noticed the tips of the leaves starting to brown a little, which, in my experience, usually means I’m overwatering. But with the frosty fern, it was the opposite! It needed more water. So now, I check the soil every day and give it a good drink whenever the top feels a little dry.
Lighting
I placed my frosty fern on a table near a window, but not directly in the sunlight. I remembered reading that they don’t like too much sun. It seems to be doing okay there. It’s not getting yellow or anything, which I guess is a good sign.
Humidity
Here’s another thing: these plants love humidity. My apartment is pretty dry, especially in the winter. So, I started misting it with a spray bottle every now and then. I also put a little tray of water near the pot. I think it’s helping, but I might invest in a small humidifier later on.
Fertilizing
I haven’t fertilized it yet, and honestly, I’m a little scared to. I heard that too much fertilizer can hurt these plants. I might try a really diluted fertilizer in the spring, but for now, I’m just going to leave it be.
Issues
-
Brown leaf tips: This happened to me at first because I wasn’t watering it enough.
-
Yellowing leaves: I haven’t had this issue, but I heard it could be from too much sun or too much fertilizer.
-
Wilting: Again, I haven’t experienced this, but I’m guessing it’s also related to not enough water or maybe too much sun.
Keeping it Going
So far, so good. My frosty fern is still alive and seems to be pretty happy. It’s not the easiest plant to care for, but it’s definitely worth the effort. It’s just so pretty! I’ll keep you all posted on its progress. Maybe I’ll even post some pictures soon. Fingers crossed I don’t kill it!
