Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to do something fun with my desk setup, and I had this crazy idea – why not combine a flowerpot with a USB hub? Yeah, sounds weird, but stick with me. I’m calling it the “Flowerpot USB.”
So, first things first, I grabbed an old flowerpot I had lying around. It’s one of those simple, plastic ones, nothing fancy. I gave it a good clean, cause, you know, dirt and electronics don’t mix. Then, I needed to figure out how to fit a USB hub inside. I found a small, four-port USB hub that looked like it would fit perfectly in the base of the pot.

- Find a suitable flowerpot and a compact USB hub.
- Clean the flowerpot thoroughly.
- Check if the USB hub fits inside the flowerpot’s base.
Next up, I drilled a small hole in the bottom of the flowerpot for the USB cable to go through. I’m not the handiest person, so this took a couple of tries. But hey, I got there in the end! I made sure the hole was just big enough for the cable, so it wouldn’t be too loose.
Now came the fun part – putting it all together. I carefully placed the USB hub inside the flowerpot, with the ports facing up, and threaded the cable through the hole I made. I used some strong adhesive tape to keep the hub in place. It wasn’t pretty on the inside, but who’s gonna see that, right?
Making It Pretty
With the technical stuff done, I started thinking about how to make it look good. I decided to fill the pot with some artificial plants. I picked out some succulents and a bit of fake moss. I arranged them around the USB ports, making sure they wouldn’t block anything but still looked natural, like they were growing around it.
Finally, I plugged the USB cable into my computer, and voila! It worked like a charm. Not only did I have a functional USB hub, but it also looked super cool on my desk. The green from the plants and the little lights from the hub – it was perfect. The LED lights are pretty useful at night.
I’ve been using my Flowerpot USB for a few weeks now, and it’s been great. It’s such a quirky little thing, and it always gets a comment from anyone who sees it. Plus, it’s a great conversation starter. Who knew a simple flowerpot and a USB hub could turn into such a fun project? It is a practical gadget, it can effortlessly connect to your computer.
I have to say, this is one of my favorite DIY projects so far. It’s simple, it’s functional, and it adds a bit of personality to my workspace. If you’re looking for a fun and easy project, give this a try. You might surprise yourself with what you can create! This thing combined nature with technology, I like it.
