Well, let’s talk about flowerpot green, ya know, those plants you stick in pots. I ain’t no fancy gardener, but I know a thing or two about keepin’ ’em alive. Folks like green stuff around, makes the house look less… well, less like a dirt shack, I guess. So, if you’re lookin’ to have some green without too much fuss, listen up.
First off, some plants are just easier to grow than others. They call ’em “low maintenance,” which just means they don’t need you fussin’ over ’em all the time. Like that Golden Pothos, they say it’s real popular, and for good reason. It grows like crazy, even if you forget to water it sometimes. My neighbor, bless her heart, she forgets everything, even her own name sometimes, but her pothos is still goin’ strong. It’s got them pretty yellow and green leaves, and they trail down real nice. Good for hangin’ in a pot, I reckon.

Then there’s those other plants, the ones for beginners. They say Monstera and Philodendron are good. Never had ’em myself, but I hear they’re tough. You know, the kind that don’t keel over if you miss a waterin’ or two. That’s important, see, ’cause life gets busy. You got kids, grandkids, chickens to feed, cows to milk… who’s got time to be waterin’ plants every five minutes? Not me, that’s for sure.
- Watering: Don’t drown ‘em, but don’t let ‘em dry out like a bone neither. Stick your finger in the dirt, if it’s dry, water it. Simple as that.
- Sunlight: Most green things like some sun, but not too much. Like folks, they get sunburned too. Put ‘em near a window, but not right smack in the sun all day long.
- Dirt: Just use some good dirt, not that hard clay stuff. You can buy it at the store, they call it “potting mix” or somethin’ fancy like that. It’s got all them little white things in it to help the roots breathe.
Now, if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ outside, in pots, that’s a whole different story. They got things like purple fountain grass, real pretty, and roses, if you’re into that kinda thing. Rosemary and sage too, good for cookin’ if you ask me. And if you wanna get fancy, there’s them Japanese maples. But them, they need a bit more care, I think. You gotta water ’em more, and they don’t like it too cold.
Evergreen trees in pots, now that’s somethin’ else. They got bay trees and olive trees, they say. But them, they can be fussy, specially in the winter. You gotta bring ’em inside if it gets too cold, or they’ll freeze solid. Had a neighbor once, tried to keep an olive tree outside all winter. Come spring, it was deader than a doornail. Waste of a good pot, if you ask me.
So, what makes a plant easy to care for? Well, it’s gotta be tough, like them winter jasmine or thyme plants. They can handle the heat, the cold, and even if you forget to water ’em for a bit, they usually bounce back. That’s what I like, plants that don’t need me hoverin’ over ’em all the time. I ain’t got time for that, I got things to do. Gotta make sure the chickens ain’t gettin’ into the garden, gotta chase the squirrels away from the bird feeder… you know how it is.
And don’t forget about fuchsia, with them pretty danglin’ flowers. They like a bit of shade, though, so don’t put ’em in the full sun. I had one once, bloomed all summer long, real pretty it was. Made the porch look real nice, even if I do say so myself. Then the darn deer ate it, but that’s another story.
So, there you have it, a few thoughts on flowerpot green. Nothin’ fancy, just plain common sense. Pick plants that are tough, don’t overwater ’em, give ’em some sun, and use good dirt. And if they die, well, try somethin’ else. That’s what I do. Ain’t no shame in killin’ a plant or two, happens to the best of us. Just keep tryin’, and eventually you’ll find somethin’ that grows, even if you ain’t got a green thumb like them fancy folks in the city. We country folk, we know how to make things grow, even if it’s just a pot of green on the porch.
