Ok, here we go, let me share my little project, the “flowerpot b1”.
Alright, so it all kicked off when I wanted a cool, self-watering system for my succulents. I was tired of either overwatering them or forgetting about them completely. The poor little guys were suffering!

First things first: I sketched out a basic design. I knew I wanted a double-pot system – an inner pot for the plant and an outer pot to hold the water reservoir. Nothing too fancy, just functional.
Then came the fun part – gathering materials. I used two plastic containers, different sizes, that I found lying around. One was an old yogurt container, the other was from some takeout I had. Gotta love recycling!
- Drilling time! I carefully drilled holes in the bottom of the yogurt container (the inner pot). These are crucial for letting the water wick up to the soil. I used a small drill bit to avoid cracking the plastic.
- Wicking material: I grabbed some cotton rope I had in my craft box. You can use pretty much anything absorbent – felt strips, nylon rope, even old t-shirt scraps. I threaded the rope through the holes I drilled, letting the ends dangle down. These are gonna be our water highways.
- Assembly: I placed the inner pot (yogurt container) inside the outer pot (takeout container). Made sure the wicking material was touching the bottom of the outer pot.
Next, I filled the inner pot with my usual succulent mix. Then, carefully planted my little succulent dude in there.
Now for the water reservoir! I poured water into the outer pot, making sure the wicking material was submerged. You gotta be careful not to overfill it, or you’ll end up with soggy roots.
Testing, testing! I kept an eye on the soil moisture levels for the next few days. It took a little while for the water to start wicking up, but eventually, the soil was consistently moist. Success!
It wasn’t perfect, mind you. I had to tweak the amount of wicking material and the water levels a few times. But hey, that’s part of the fun, right?
And that’s pretty much it! My “flowerpot b1” is a simple, DIY self-watering system that keeps my succulents happy and healthy. It’s not the prettiest thing in the world, but it works, and that’s all that matters!

Lessons learned:
- Plastic containers work fine, but terracotta pots might be better for breathability. I might try that next time.
- Experiment with different wicking materials to find what works best for your plants and soil.
- Don’t be afraid to adjust your setup as needed. It’s all about finding what works for you!
So yeah, that’s my “flowerpot b1” project. Give it a shot if you’re looking for a simple and cheap way to keep your plants watered!
